Regular Season Round 18: Apollon - Etha 83-96

The most shocking disappointment of round 18 was a home defeat of 5th ranked Apollon (3-15) to sixth ranked Etha (4-14) 96-83 in the game for the fifth place. The game was mostly controlled by Etha. Apollon managed to win second period 19-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Apollon's 22. Etha had a 29-17 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. 29 personal fouls committed by Apollon helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Baden Jaxen (190-90, college: N.Carolina) scored 36 points (!!!), 9 rebounds and 9 assists to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import guard Leron Barnes (196-93, college: Houston) chipped in 21 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. Four Etha players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was the former international point guard Aristides Koronides (188-82) with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 10 assists and the former international guard Iraklis Pittakas (192-84) scored 21 points. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Etha moved-up to fifth place. Apollon lost eighth consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom position with 15 games lost. Etha are looking forward to face higher ranked Apoel (#3) in Nicosia in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Apollon will play on the road against the league's leader Keravnos in Strovolos and is hoping to win this game.
