Regular Season Round 14: Petrolina AEK - Anagennises 49-59

Date: February 24, 2019
We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams in Larnaca where fifth ranked Anagennises (8-6) defeated one of their biggest challengers Petrolina AEK (8-6) 59-49. The game was mostly controlled by Anagennises. Petrolina AEK was better in third quarter 16-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Anagennises held Petrolina AEK to an opponent 24.2 percent shooting from the field compared to 35.4 percent accuracy of the winners. They outrebounded Petrolina AEK 50-29 including a 35-23 advantage in defensive rebounds. American guard Maranne Johnson (170-96, college: Sacramento St.) notched a double-double by scoring 28 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the effort and guard Ioanna Pittaka (172-95) supported her with 8 points and 9 rebounds. Even 15 points and 5 steals by American guard Erika Sisk (175-94, college: Mississippi) did not help to save the game for Petrolina AEK. Naturalized British forward Chrystalla Merkouri (182-75) added 6 points and 11 rebounds for the hosts. Petrolina AEK's coach Michalis Michael tested eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Anagennises have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with defeated Petrolina AEK.
