Very important is a road loss of third ranked Apollon (11-5) against fifth ranked Apoel (7-8) on Sunday night. Visiting Apollon was defeated by Apoel in a tough game in Nicosia 94-100. Apollon was ahead by 3 points after three quarters before a 25-16 charge of Apoel, which allowed them to win the game. They also forced 23 Apollon turnovers. Strangely Apollon outrebounded Apoel 43-26 including a 32-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. American forward Marcus Gilbert (198-93, college: Fairfield) scored 34 points (!!!) and 4 steals to lead the charge for the winners and the former international point guard Stefanos Iliadis (185-94, college: S.Florida) chipped in 29 points, 6 assists and 5 steals during the contest. The best for the losing side was the former international guard Panagiotis Markou (189-96) with 31 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists and American power forward Jeff Allen (201-87, college: Virginia Tech) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 16 rebounds. Four Apoel and five Apollon players scored in double figures. Apoel maintains fifth position with 7-8 record. Apollon at the other side keeps the third place with five games lost. Apoel will play against bottom-ranked AEL (#9) in Limassol in the next round. Apollon will play on the road against Omonia (#7) in Nicosia and hopes to get back on the winning track.
