Regular Season Round 14: APOP Paphou - AEL 48-84
Date: February 7, 2021
Bottom-ranked APOP Paphou (0-12) is still winless. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their 12th consecutive match to second ranked AEL (9-3) 84-48 on Sunday evening. The game without a history. AEL led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to APOP Paphou's 22. They outrebounded APOP Paphou 49-26 including a 20-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American guard Jamie Cherry (173-97, college: UNC) who scored 24 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). The former international center Eleni Oikonomidou (180-97) chipped in a double-double by scoring 16 points and 12 rebounds. Four AEL players scored in double figures. AEL's coach Giorgos Palalas felt very confident using entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American guard Miyah Barnes (165-98, college: UAB) produced 38 points (!!!) and 6 rebounds and guard Leontia Panagiotaki (168-4) added 2 points and 8 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Defending champion maintains second position with 9-3 record having just three points less than leader Anorthosis. Loser APOP Paphou still closes the standings with 12 games lost.
