Regular Season Round 15: Apoel - Apollon 87-80

There was no surprise in Nicosia where 8th ranked Apollon (6-9) was defeated by second ranked Apoel (12-3) 87-80 on Saturday. The game without a history. Apoel led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was American guard Dayon Griffin (196-95, college: UCF) who scored 30 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Nigerian-American forward Emmanuel Omogbo (203-95, college: Colorado St., agency: Octagon Europe) chipped in 18 points and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Mike Holton Jr (186-90, college: St.Michael's) who recorded 18 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists (went 11 for 11 at the free throw line !!!) and naturalized Serbian swingman Petar Zdravic (194-97) added 19 points respectively. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Apoel maintains second place with 12-3 record behind leader AEK Larnaca. Apollon at the other side dropped to the seventh position with nine games lost. They share it with AEL and APOP. Apoel will meet at home Achilleas K. (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Apollon will play against Anorthosis and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
