Regular Season Round 12: APOP - AEL 82-54
Date: January 4, 2023
There was a surprise result when ninth ranked APOP (3-7) crushed higher ranked AEL (7-4) in Paphou 82-54 on Wednesday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 15-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 82-54. APOP dominated on the defensive end, holding AEL to just 7 points in second quarter. APOP had a 38-23 advantage in offensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when APOP made 9 blocks. American players dominated the game. The winners were led by guard JaQualyn Gilbreath (188-1998, college: TWU) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 23 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists and Jeremy McLaughlin (203-1995, college: Catawba) supported him with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. Even 28 points and 9 rebounds by point guard Brandon Averette (180-1997, college: BYU) did not help to save the game for AEL. Guard Courtney Pigram (185-1985, college: ETSU, agency: Interperformances) added 12 points and 7 rebounds. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. APOP maintains ninth position with 3-7 record. Loser AEL keeps the fourth place with four games lost. APOP will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. AEL will play against Anorthosis (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
