Eurobasket.com All-Cyprus League Awards 2008-09 - Apr 27, 2009
Every year we traditionally announce our own nominations for the season-end awards in Cyprus and this season is not different: AEL collected definitely the best players in the league, but it would be unfair to award only AEL's players so we tried to keep that selection as balanced as possible keeping in mind consistency in the local competitions. Stavria Koniali is the Newcomer of the Year. Although she did not play too much she is definitely the one of the best talents in Cyprus at the moment, and she is only 15 years old. Coach of the Year award goes this year to Nemanja Bjedov of Achilleas. If we take into consideration only the final results obviously AEL topped everyone else and then we could pick their coach as the best coach of the year; however, it is important to notice that AEL had in fact 10 international players within their roster and it was not really that hard to achieve what his team did within Cyprus. Keravnos reached the playoff finals, but that is where they were last year so they did not really improve too much comparing to the last season. They defeated Achilleas in the semis 3-1, but not a single time by more than six points. Achilleas actually improved this season the most comparing to the last year reaching the cup final and the playoff semis. The All-Newcomers category was a bit tricky to decide but we listed the youngest girls which probably played their first senior games this season. In their official statement they cited a lack of fair-play on the part of AEL, arising from the federations recent decision to allow an unlimited number of international players in the womens league. Traditionally each team constituted of young Cypriot and amateur players with a three international player limitation; however, as of this season, the three-player limitation was negated.
