APOEL is the new champion in Cyprus - May 11, 2002
by Cyprus WeeklyNo sooner had Apoel fans stopped celebrating their side's football championship win than a new victory was on the cards, this time in basketball. Last Tuesday it was party time again as the Nicosia powerhouse crushed Keravnos by 80-53 at the “Eleftheria†indoor arena, cheered on by some four thousand fans. In this way, Apoel made it 3-1 wins and secured the league championship. Apoel deservedly won the title, although they got off to a shaky start and were not considered favorites. So the eighth basketball title in their history was wildly celebrated, both at the club's headquarters and in the streets of Nicosia. The game at the "Eleftheria: was up for grabs in the first half only, at the end of which Apoel's lead was theoretically reversible. They led by 17-14 after 10 minutes played and by 38-28 at half time. Apoel went into overdrive as the second half resumed and within the space of seven minutes managed a 26-point lead (58-32). Their success was mostly based on solid defense. Keravnos tried to make a comeback and managed to slash the deficit to 58-39, but that was all they could do. With the hosts cheered on by their fans, that was all they needed to take full control of the game. Apoel's scorers: Stylianides 11, Garcia 8, Johnson 31, Burton 17, Kounas 4, Karapatakis 2, Serdaris 5, Sizopoulos 2 Keravnos’ scorers: Barlas 6, Koronides 3, Anastasiades 10, Arnold 14, Robinson 8, Fawlkes 6, Trisokkas 4, Kaskiris 2
