Euroleague Championship day, CSKA prevails as the new kings-Apr 30, 2006
The third place game was between the two ACB powers Tau and Barcelona.
The arena was partially filled in the first half because most of the ticket holders were Maccabi fans who arrived later for the big game.
Both of these teams were very familiar with each other tactics.
Tau raced out to an early 26-19 lead behind the play of Travis Hansen (198-G/F-78, college: BYU) despite Luis Scola picking up two early fouls in the opening period.
Botsy Thorton paced Barcelona with 8 points in the first quarter.
In the second quarter the inside play of Tau was superior as Drobnjak muscled a few inside baskets.
Tau took a 47-36 halftime lead into the locker room as Travis Hansen (198-G/F-78, college: BYU) continued to stroke the deep ball with 15 first half points.
In the third quarter Gregor Fucka (214-C-71, agency: Interperformances) and Navaro fueled a Barcelona comeback as they picked up their intensity.
Navaro was unstoppable in the last five minutes as Barcelona knotted the score 60-60 as quarter ended.
In the fourth quarter it was a back and forth battle but every time Barcelona made a run the inside rebounding and presence was too much for the reds.
Tau won the battle of the ACB heavyweights for the third place in the Euroleague.
The atmosphere for the Euroleague championship game was incredible as the Maccabi fans packed the Sazka arena in Prague.
The fans for CSKA did not have a chance as the were drowned out by the sheer force of numbers.
This was like a home game for the Maccabi squad.
As you walked around the arena you could see who's who in basketball featuring many present and past basketball figures from both sides of the water.
The game started with a lot of nervous energy from both sides but Maccabi benefited from the energy of the pro home crowd.
The fans were so loud that the players could not hear each other.
The quarter ended in a 18-18 draw as both teams to struggled to find their offensive flow.
At the end of the second quarter CSKA picked up their defense and Maccabi never got any offense going as they made a lot of turnovers which resulted in easy baskets for CSKA.
The Moscow team strolled into the halftime break with a 35-30 as a result of great team defense.
In the third quarter both teams traded blow for blow and Maccabi made a small run to tie up the score with two minutes remaining.
David Vanterpool (195-G/F-73, college: St.Bonaventure) lead all scorers with 14 points at the end of the third period as CSKA held a 49-48 advantage.
Maccabi started the forth quarter with two bad possessions and CSKA Moscow started with two 3 point shots.
Both teams then heated up after exchanging 3 point baskets by Landon, Parker and Solomon.
CSKA managed to always have an answer by hitting big shots to keep a slim margin and never trailed but once in the second half.
All night CSKA just had Maccabi's number by hitting timely perimeter shots and forcing Maccabi in mistakes.
Theodoros Papaloukas (200-G-77) controlled the tempo for CSKA very well and was the offensive catalyst for the Moscow team.
CSKA managed to hold off Maccabi to gain an impressive 73-69 victory and are the Euroleague champions for 2006.
The loss stop Maccabi's chance to three peat Europe's biggest basketball event and was CSKA first title since 1971.
Theo Papaloukas after scoring 18 points and handing out 7 assists was name the games MVP with his outstanding play.
Even in defeat the large Maccabi fan base showed great sportsmanship by cheering and applauding the newly crowned Euroleague champions from Moscow.
