Malta and Andorra will meet for the title at the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries after both cruised through the semifinals at the Tercentenary Sports Hall, leaving hosts Gibraltar and San Marino to contest the bronze.
Malta booked their place with a 99-60 win over San Marino, pulling away after a competitive first half. The Maltese led 41-31 at the break before a strong third quarter and a 34-8 fourth blew the game open. Jordan Tucker (200-F-1998, college: Butler) led the way with 28 points, eight rebounds and four assists on 4-of-7 from three, with Kurt Cassar (208-C-1999) adding 14 points and seven rebounds and Michael Sjoberg (203-PF-1999) and Deguara Samuel (230-C-1991) chipping in 10 apiece Deguara perfect from the field. Pietro Ugolini (198-F/G-2000) and Ygor Biordi (204-C/F-1996) scored 14 and 13 for San Marino, who were undone by 27 turnovers. Andorra were even more dominant in a 91-42 rout of Gibraltar. The hosts started brightly and led 12-5 early, but Andorra answered with a run capped by an Alex Serra (193-G-2000) layup to level it, seized the lead for good, and never relented closing with a 19-0 burst in the fourth. Ignasi Armengol (193-F-2007) led the way with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists, Cinto Gabriel (200-C-1987) added 13 points and six rebounds, and Joan Aguilar (189-F/C-2006) scored 12 on perfect shooting with a game-best plus-34, while Ken Santiago (180-PG-2007) drained three straight threes late. Jamie Mcgrail (183-G-2003) top-scored for Gibraltar with 17. Malta will face Andorra for gold, with San Marino and Gibraltar meeting in the bronze-medal game. |
