Juhos' 19-rebound masterclass and Mitchell's 21 power Phoenix-MT Fot to historic promotion with Game 4 road triumph-May 24, 2026
Phoenix-MT Fot are Hungarian NB I Zold champions and NB I.A bound for the first time in the club's history, storming past BKG Prima Akademia 94-83 on the road in Game 4 to clinch the best-of-five finals 3-1 completing a journey from the NB2 to the elite division in just seven years. "The magnitude of my happiness and pride is boundless," an emotional coach Surmann Gabor said. "Seven years ago we were in NB2, and now we've been promoted to the top tier. It's still surreal." The numbers back up the emotion. Phoenix-MT Fot finished the regular season 24-2 setting a new league record with a 22-game winning streak and 17 wins in 18 road games. After dropping Game 1 of the finals, they reeled off three straight victories including two on BKG's home floor to clinch promotion with authority. Levente Juhos (205-C/F-1991, college: Moberly Area) was the game's dominant force with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and an astonishing 19 rebounds (17 offensive) for a game-high 35 efficiency. Shereef Mitchell (185-G-2000, college: Ohio) added 21 points (8-of-13 FG, 5-of-5 FT) and five rebounds with 28 efficiency, while Dominik Karda (186-G-2005) contributed 16 on 7-of-11 shooting. Andras Dancsecs (188-SG-2000) had 19 points (5-of-5 FT) and six turnovers forced, and Csanad Antoni (193-F/G-1996) added 10 points and seven rebounds. Phoenix-MT Fot trailed 18-17 after the first quarter but seized control with a 26-21 second period to lead 43-39 at halftime. A competitive 20-22 third quarter kept BKG within range entering the fourth, but Phoenix-MT Fot detonated a 31-22 final period that buried the hosts' hopes. Their 81 percent shooting from close range (25-of-31) and dominant 45-27 rebounding advantage were the decisive statistical edges. For BKG, Botond Nagy (178-PG-1994) was heroic with 32 points but shot just 7-of-26 from the field, needing 13-of-17 from the free-throw line to reach his total. Armin Armaghani (197-SF-2000) added 18 points (8-of-13 FG) and seven rebounds, while Dean Reiber (208-F, college: Charlotte) had 17. Coach Dr. Agoston Nagy acknowledged "immeasurable disappointment" but expressed pride in a "wonderful year" and indicated the club would accept promotion to NB I.A as runners-up if offered. The post-game celebrations were marred by a controversy the home club initially refused to allow Phoenix-MT Fot to cut down the nets, a traditional championship gesture. Surmann addressed it directly: "Not knowing how to lose is more than concerning." He noted that BKG's assistant coach, technical director, and a key player apologized for the decision, and that the net ultimately came down with outside help. "The net is still around my neck," Surmann said. "And I'm going to sleep in it." Eurobasket.com All-Hungarian B Red Awards 2026-Jun 1, 2026
