LBA Kaunas: Building an International Basketball Development Pathway in Lithuania

- November 3, 2026
Eurobasket News

Lithuanian Basketball Academy continues to attract international talent, bringing together players from different continents to compete, develop and pursue their basketball ambitions in Lithuania.

KAUNAS, LITHUANIA Over the past three seasons, LBA Kaunas (Lithuanian Basketball Academy) has continued to establish itself as an international basketball development program, welcoming ambitious athletes from around the world and providing them with an opportunity to experience competitive Lithuanian basketball.

Based in Kaunas, one of Europe's most recognized basketball cities, the academy competes in the Kaunas Basketball League (KKL), offering international players the opportunity to develop their skills, gain official game experience and prepare for the next stages of their basketball careers.

Since the 2024/25 season, LBA Kaunas has welcomed players from the United States, Georgia, Turkey, North Macedonia, Tanzania, the Bahamas, the United Kingdom, Lithuania, Greece, India and Bulgaria.

This international recruitment approach has helped create a multicultural basketball environment where players from different countries, basketball systems and backgrounds train and compete together.

For many of these athletes, joining LBA Kaunas represents an important step toward gaining European basketball experience and exploring opportunities at higher levels of competition.

International Basketball Development in Kaunas

Lithuania is widely recognized for its basketball tradition, technical fundamentals and competitive playing environment.

For international athletes looking to establish themselves in European basketball, adapting to the Lithuanian style of play can provide valuable experience.

LBA Kaunas focuses on combining structured basketball training with competitive league participation, helping players improve their individual abilities while developing a better understanding of European basketball systems.

The academy's development philosophy emphasizes technical improvement, tactical awareness, physical preparation, mental strength and professional discipline.

Players are encouraged to take responsibility for their individual progress while learning how to contribute effectively within a team environment.

Competing in the KKL also provides athletes with regular opportunities to test themselves against Lithuanian opponents and gain experience in competitive basketball situations.

Levan Japaridze Leading LBA Kaunas Through Three Seasons

The academy operates under the leadership of General Manager Levan Japaridze, who has overseen the program throughout the 2024/25, 2025/26 and 2026/27 seasons.

Before taking on his management responsibilities in Lithuania, Japaridze gained coaching experience in several European basketball environments.

He previously worked as Head Coach of BEATS Academy (Budapest Prep) in Hungary and BTB Tbilisi in Georgia, while also serving as an Assistant Coach for BC Titebi in the Georgian Superleague.

His coaching background has contributed to the development philosophy he now applies at LBA Kaunas.

Japaridze believes that youth basketball development should focus not only on technical skills and athletic performance but also on the individual characteristics and mentality of each player.

For him, discipline, respect, responsibility and coachability are essential qualities for athletes aspiring to compete professionally.

His philosophy is based on the belief that developing strong character and mental resilience is just as important as developing basketball talent.

This approach has become an important part of LBA Kaunas' identity, with the academy emphasizing individual development and preparation for the demands of competitive basketball.

A Multicultural Environment With a Shared Goal

One of LBA Kaunas' defining characteristics is its international roster.

Over the past three seasons, players from Europe, North America, Africa and Asia have joined the academy, bringing different playing styles, experiences and basketball traditions.

This diversity creates an environment where athletes learn to communicate, compete and work together despite differences in nationality and background.

For international players, the experience extends beyond basketball.

Living in Lithuania, adapting to a new culture and competing within a different basketball system all contribute to personal and athletic development.

The academy believes these experiences can help players become more independent, disciplined and prepared for the challenges of pursuing a professional basketball career.

Preparing Players for the Next Level

LBA Kaunas aims to provide more than a season of basketball competition.

The academy's broader objective is to help players build the experience, confidence and professional habits required to pursue opportunities at higher levels.

Through basketball training, league competition and individual development, players have opportunities to improve their performances and demonstrate their abilities.

The academy also places importance on helping athletes understand the expectations of professional basketball, including consistency, teamwork, tactical discipline and the ability to respond positively to coaching.

For Japaridze and the LBA Kaunas staff, the development process is not measured exclusively by statistics or individual performances.

Progress also includes improved decision-making, stronger mental preparation, better communication and greater responsibility on and off the court.

Looking Ahead: LBA Kaunas and the 2026/27 Season

As LBA Kaunas continues its third season under Japaridze's leadership, the academy remains committed to strengthening its international identity and developing its basketball program in Lithuania.

The 2026/27 campaign represents another opportunity for the organization to bring together talented players from different countries and provide them with competitive experience in the Lithuanian basketball environment.

Looking ahead, the academy aims to continue expanding its international recruitment, strengthening its development structure and creating opportunities for athletes seeking to progress in European basketball.

With its multicultural roster, emphasis on individual development and commitment to competitive basketball, LBA Kaunas continues working toward its long-term vision of becoming an established international basketball development destination.

For LBA Kaunas, success is not measured only by victories on the court, but also by the development of players who leave the academy better prepared for the next stage of their basketball careers.
