Regular Season Round 5: Szolnok - Besiktas 70-73

Not a big story in a game when Hungarian Szolnok (1-4) was edged at home by Turkish Besiktas (4-1) 73-70 on Tuesday. The guests started the game with a very strong first quarter 20-7. But Szolnok won second period 21-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Besiktas won last quarter 20-18. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Szolnok to just 7 points in first quarter. Besiktas looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Szolnok was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. American guard Chris Lofton (188-86, college: Tennessee) stepped up and scored 19 points and 7 assists for the winners and his fellow American import power forward JaJuan Johnson (208-89, college: Purdue) chipped in 18 points and 6 rebounds. Besiktas' coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American point guard Lazeric Jones (182-90, college: UCLA) responded with 14 points and 5 assists and Serbian forward Strahinja Milosevic (203-85, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) scored 13 points and 6 rebounds. Four Szolnok players scored in double figures. They have a solid series of four victories in a row. Besiktas keep a position of Group D leader, which they share with Un.Olimpija. Szolnok lost fourth consecutive game. Defending Hungarian champion stay at the bottom place with four games lost. Besiktas will face Un.Olimpija in Ljubljana in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Szolnok will play on the road against Zenit in Saint Petersburg and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
