Kokila and Mokoka power JL Bourg to historic first EuroCup title with series sweep of Besiktas-Apr 28, 2026
Cosea JL Bourg-en-Bresse etched their name into European basketball history on Tuesday night, holding off a furious Besiktas GAIN Istanbul comeback to win 73-71 at Ekinox and complete a 2-0 sweep of the BKT EuroCup Finals — claiming the club's first-ever continental trophy and a coveted EuroLeague berth for the 2026-27 season.
Kevin Kokila (204-F/C-2001) was immense in the clincher, scoring 18 points on a brutally efficient 6-of-8 from two-point range and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line while grabbing six rebounds — four offensive — and generating a game-high 27 efficiency in just over 20 minutes. Adam Mokoka (195-G/F-1998), who had been the hero of the Game 1 road victory in Istanbul, backed it up with 17 points on 6-of-12 from inside the arc, adding a game-high 10 rebounds, including four offensive boards, along with an assist and a steal.
Coach Frederic Fauthoux's side seized early control with a 25-17 first quarter, their suffocating defense again setting the tone just as it had in the 72-60 Game 1 road win. But Besiktas, coached by Dusan Alimpijevic, roared back in the second quarter, outscoring Bourg 23-13 to take a 40-38 lead into halftime.
The third quarter swung the pendulum back. Bourg clamped down defensively once more, holding Besiktas to just 12 points while scoring 17 of their own to carry a 55-52 advantage into the fourth. The final period was tense throughout, with Besiktas refusing to fold. The Turkish side outscored Bourg 19-18 in the fourth but could never reclaim the lead, as Kokila's free-throw shooting and Mokoka's relentless rebounding kept the French side ahead in the critical possessions.
Ricky Ricardo Lindo Jr. (203-F-2000, college: GWU) was the unsung hero with seven rebounds (four offensive) and four assists in 29 minutes despite scoring just two points, his physical presence on the boards and passing from the high post proving vital. Tre Mitchell (206-F/C-2000, college: Kentucky) contributed nine points and four rebounds, while William McDowell-White (196-G-1998, college: Fresno St.) added nine points, two rebounds, and three assists.
For Besiktas, who entered the finals as favorites after finishing atop Group B and winning both regular-season meetings against Bourg, the defeat was devastating. Ante Zizic (210-C-1997) led with 14 points on a perfect 5-of-5 from two-point range and eight rebounds, while Jonah Mathews (191-SG-1998, college: USC) bounced back from a nightmare Game 1 with 18 points on 4-of-8 from inside and 3-of-7 from deep. Brynton Lemar (193-SG-1995, college: UC Davis) added 13 points (6-of-6 FT) and Anthony Brown (199-SF-1992, college: Stanford) had 10. But Besiktas shot just 24 percent from three-point range (6-of-25) and were outrebounded 40-37, with Bourg's offensive rebounding advantage (18-13) generating crucial second-chance opportunities in a two-point game.
The title caps a fairy-tale EuroCup run for a club from a city of just 40,000 inhabitants. Bourg overcame Cedevita Olimpija in the quarterfinals and edged Turk Telekom 2-1 in a grueling semifinal before stunning Besiktas twice — including handing the Black Eagles their first home loss of the European campaign in Game 1. The aggregate margin across the two finals games was just 14 points (145-131), but Bourg's defensive identity and collective will carried them through.
