Qualifying Round Day 9: LATVIA - GEORGIA 70-73

Georgia clinched the spot at 2013 EuroBasket. They gained a crucial win over Latvia in Riga tonight to punch the ticket to Slovenia. Georgia are now at 5-2 record in Group D. If they beat Netherlands in the next round they will clinch the top position in the ladder. Latvia in the meantime endangered their qualification chances. They must edge Romania in the final round to advance. The teams started the game quite slowly. They teamed up for 20 points in the opening quarter. Latvia gained a 13:7 lead. But Georgia took over in the second frame. Jacob Pullen knocked down 8 straight points midway through the period to level things up at 20. The visitors capped the half with 11 points in a row to gain a 31:24 lead. Latvia managed to return the lead late in the third term. Davis Bertans made it 44:43 for the hosts. But Shermadini ensured a 48:46 Georgian lead at the final break. Georgia used a 9:0 run midway through the fourth frame to make it 62:55. Strelnieks put Latvia within one 70:71 with 11 seconds remaining. Zaza Pachulia answered with a dunk and then both Strelnieks and Kuksiks missed their three-point attempts as Georgia got away with victory. Manuchar Markoishvili provided 17 points for Georgia. Zaza Pachulia and Jacob Pullen added 15 points each for the winners. Kaspars Berzins answered with 15 points for Latvia. Martins Meiers had 14 points in the loss.
