Qualification game
Before the tournament began, a qualification game was played between
Spain and Portugal. The game was held in Madrid, Spain and refereed by
Spanish coach Mariano Manent. Spain won, 33-12.

Preliminary round
The preliminary round was single-elimination, with losers moving to the
classification round. Three of the five winners moved immediately to the
semi-finals, while two (Italy and Switzerland) played each other in a
sixth preliminary game, with the winner moving on and the loser going to
classification.
