2022 EuroBasket: Germany step onto the podium, beat Poland in consolation final - Sep 18, 2022

Germany earned 2022 EuroBasket Bronze medals. They outlasted Poland in a tough contest in Berlin tonight. Dennis Schroeder (181-PG-1993) stepped up with 26 points and 6 assists to lead the hosts.
Germany capitalized on a slow start from Poland to dominate in the first half. The hosts grabbed a 19-14 lead ten minutes into the game. They followed with a 17-9 rally in the second period to secure a 36-23 halftime advantage. But Poland stepped on the gas in the third term. Jakub Garbacz (197-G/F-1994) hit a bunch of three-pointers to ignite the Polish run. They poured in 26 points in the third quarter to pull within 5 points at the final break 54-49. Jakub Garbacz tied things up with a three-pointer 59-59 early in the fourth quarter. But Johannes Voigtmann (211-F/C-1992) hit back-to-back three-pointers and Dennis Schroeder added two free throws and another trifecta to regain a 73-64 lead for the hosts with four minutes remaining. Dennis Schroeder drained one more three-pointer to make it 76-66 for Germany with just over two minutes to go and the home side did not look back en route to the win. Johannes Voigtmann provided 14 points for the winners. Michal Sokolowski (196-F/G-1992) connected for 18 points, while Jakub Garbacz produced 12 points for Poland.


2022 EuroBasket: Spain crowned champions in Berlin - Sep 18, 2022

Spain conquered the 2022 EuroBasket crown. They overcame France in the title game in Berlin tonight to earn the fourth European title in the last six editions of the tournament. Juancho Hernangomez (206-F-1995) stole the limelight in the Final stepping up with impressive 27 points and 5 rebounds to carry Spain to the triumph.
Spain opened the game on a 14-5 spurt. They soon opened a 20-9 lead and finished the first period up by 9 points 23-14. Spain stormed to a 41-22 lead midway through the second quarter. Willy Hernangomez (210-C-1994) gave Spain a massive 47-26 advantage late in the first half. France managed though to cut it to 10 points 37-47 at the big break. Les Bleus went on a mini run early in the third period to pull within three points 46-49. But Spain immediately answered with 9 unanswered points to restore a comfortable advantage. Spain arrived at the final break up by 9 points 66-57. They kept France at distance throughout the fourth period. Lorenzo Brown (196-PG-1990, college: NC State) gave Spain a 75-63 lead midway through the stanza. France could not get within single digits throughout the reminder of the contest as Spain eased to an impressive victory at the end. Lorenzo Brown and Willy Hernangomez produced 14 points apiece for the champions. Evan Fournier (198-G/F-1992) answered with 23 points, while Thomas Heurtel (189-PG-1989) added 16 points and 7 assists for France.


2022 EuroBasket: France on cruise mode in semifinal win over Poland - Sep 16, 2022

France made it look easy as they coasted past Poland in the semifinal clash in Berlin tonight. Les Bleus dominated from start to finish to earn a well-deserved victory and the ticket into 2022 EuroBasket Final at the end. Guerschon Yabusele (201-PF-1995) finished with 22 points to lead the winners.
France showed a stifling defensive effort right from the tip off. They held Poland to 9 points in the first period to take a 6-point lead. France did not loosen the grip in the second period. Les Bleus recorded a comfortable 34-18 halftime advantage. Things went from bad to worse for Poland in the second half. They struggled to pick up the tempo as France poured in 30 points in the next period and ensured a massive 64-36 lead at the final break. France cruised to the victory in the fourth period resting the starting five. Elie Okobo (191-G-1997) and Evan Fournier (198-G/F-1992) delivered 10 points apiece for France. A.J. Slaughter (191-SG-1987, college: WKU) and Michal Michalak (196-G/F-1993, agency: Octagon Europe) provided 9 points each for Poland.

2022 EuroBasket: Spain outlast Germany behind 29 points from Lorenzo Brown - Sep 16, 2022

Spain executed their game plan to perfection and silenced Germany in the second semifinal clash of 2022 EuroBasket tonight. Lorenzo Brown (196-PG-1990, college: NC State) scored 29 points and dished out 6 assists to lead the winners into the Final. Spain will now take on France in the title clash on Sunday.
Spain shot the lights out in the first period as they took a 27-24 lead after ten minutes. But Germany found their rhythm in the second quarter. The hosts answered with a 27-point effort of their own to gain a 51-46 halftime lead. The third period saw a seesaw action throughout. Spain got to a strong start of the second half and regained the lead at 61-57. But Germany responded with a 14-0 run to open a 71-61 lead. Spain cut the deficit at 6-point mark heading into the fourth term 65-71. Germany opened a 7-point lead 77-70 early in the fourth quarter. But Spain responded with a strong 13-0 push to surge ahead. Lorenzo Brown gave Spain an 88-80 advantage with 36 seconds remaining in regulation. Andreas Obst (191-SG-1996, agency: BeoBasket) drained a triple to give Germany hope. But Willy Hernangomez (210-C-1994) and Lorenzo Brown sank six free throws and Juancho Hernangomez (206-F-1995) dunked the ball as Spain got away with a thrilling tough victory at the end. Willy Hernangomez produced 16 points, while Juancho Hernangomez added 13 points for the winners. Dennis Schroeder (181-PG-1993) replied with 30 points and 8 assists for Germany. Franz Wagner (206-F-2001, college: Michigan) accounted for 15 points in the defeat.

2022 EuroBasket: Poland eliminate Slovenia in a shocker - Sep 15, 2022

Poland came up with one of the biggest upsets at the 2022 EuroBasket as they eliminated Slovenia in the quarterfinal clash in Berlin tonight. Mateusz Ponitka (198-SF-1993) tallied 26 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the winners.
Poland looked red-hot offensively in the first half. They poured in 29 points in the first period to take a 3-point lead. Poland did not loosen the grasp in the second stanza. They established a massive 58-39 halftime advantage. But Slovenia turned things around in the third term. They finally adjusted their tempo and started clicking. Slovenia used a 24-6 run in the third frame to cut the deficit to a single point 63-64. Slovenia finally grabbed a 74-73 lead after a layup from Goran Dragic (190-G-1986). But Poland quickly regained the advantage. A.J. Slaughter (191-SG-1987, college: WKU) gave them an 84-76 advantage with under three minutes to go. Goran Dragic and Mike Tobey (213-C-1994, college: Virginia) pulled Slovenia within four 80-84 with 90 seconds to go. Mateusz Ponitka drained a three-pointer and added two free throws to give Poland a breathing room. However Edo Muric (202-F-1991) hit a timely three-pointer and then Vlatko Cancar (203-SF-1997, agency: BeoBasket) came up with a steal to set up Goran Dragic's layup to put Slovenia within three with 31 seconds to go. A.J. Slaughter missed his jumper but Klemen Prepelic (191-SG-1992) could not convert a wild midcourt buzzer-beater as Poland ran away with a dramatic win. A.J. Slaughter and Michal Sokolowski (196-F/G-1992) finished with 16 points each for Poland. Vlatko Cancar answered with 21 points for Slovenia. Goran Dragic netted 17 points in the defeat.

2022 EuroBasket: France punish Italy late, steal overtime win - Sep 14, 2022

France overcame a somewhat lethargic performance at times against Italy and picked up the tempo when needed the most - late in regulation and overtime claiming yet another dramatic win at the 2022 EuroBasket knockout stage. Rudy Gobert (216-C-1992) came up with 19 points and 14 rebounds to lead les Bleus to the semis.
France shot the ball well in the first period to jump ahead 27-20 after ten minutes. The teams slowed down in the second period. The turnovers and misses highlighted a low-scoring quarter as France secured a 38-31 halftime lead. But Italy finally found the groove late in the third period. They ignited a 19-6 rally to cap the stanza as the Azzurri opened a 62-56 advantage. Italy led throughout the bigger part of the fourth term. Rudy Gobert cut the deficit to 2 points with just over three minutes left in regulation. Marco Spissu (184-PG-1995) and Simone Fontecchio (203-SF-1995) boosted the lead to 7 points 75-68 with just over two minutes to go. But Rudy Gobert and Fournier kept France in the game. Terry Tarpey (195-G-1994, college: William & Mary) tipped the ball in to narrow the deficit at 2-point mark 75-77 with 41 seconds left. Simone Simone Fontecchio missed two free throws at the other end and Thomas Heurtel (189-PG-1989) punished Italy with a layup to force overtime. Thomas Heurtel sank quick 6 points in the extra period to put France in charge. Rudy Gobert and Terry Tarpey then stretched the lead to 6 points 91-85 and France drove to the victory at the end. Thomas Heurtel topscored with 20 points for les Bleus. Evan Fournier (198-G/F-1992) tossed in 17 points. Simone Fontecchio and Marco Spissu notched 21 points each for Italy.

Spain advanced into the semifinal stage at the 2022 EuroBasket. They prevailed against Finland in the quarterfinal battle in Berlin today. Willy Hernangomez (210-C-1994) provided 27 points and 5 rebounds to lead the winners.
Finland were quick off the blocks erupting for 30 points in the first period and taking an 11-point lead. They maintained the advantage throughout the second period. Finland accumulated a 52-43 halftime advantage. Spain however turned the tables in the third period. They erased the deficit as Willy Hernangomez finally gave Spain a 65-64 lead late in the quarter. Rudy Fernandez (196-SF-1985, agency: Octagon Europe) and Dario Brizuela (188-G-1994) drained back-to-back three-pointers to secure a 73-65 advantage for Spain. Finland cut the deficit to just two points 80-82 midway through the fourth stanza. But Dario Brizuela and Rudy Fernandez once again hit a pair of three-pointers to give Spain a 90-82 lead with under three minutes to go. Rudy Fernandez added another triple to secure a 95-84 advantage with under two minutes remaining and Spain rushed to the victory at the end. Juancho Hernangomez (206-F-1995) tallied 15 points, while Dario Brizuela added 14 points for Spain. Lauri Markkanen (216-F/C-1997, college: Arizona) answered with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Mikael Jantunen (204-F-2000, college: Utah) tossed in 18 points in the losing case.

Ukraine however adjusted offensively in the second period. They managed to pull ahead to take a 45-42 halftime lead. Ukraine opened a 7-point lead in the third term but not for long. Poland erased the deficit and regained a 69-67 lead heading into the fourth period. Mateusz Ponitka (198-SF-1993) and Michal Sokolowski (196-F/G-1992) gave Poland an 84-78 advantage midway through the fourth quarter. Mateusz Ponitka then followed with a three-pointer to make it 87-78 and Poland never looked back rallying to the victory at the end. Mateusz Ponitka provided 22 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for Poland. Finland secured their 2022 EuroBasket quarterfinal appearance as they outgunned Croatia in Berlin today. Lauri Markkanen (216-F/C-1997, college: Arizona) erupted with 43 points and 9 rebounds to carry Finland to the victory.
It was a close battle throughout the first three quarters. Croatia enjoyed a narrow 21-20 lead after the first period. Finland stepped on the gas in the second term. They drained 25 points to eke out a 45-43 halftime lead. Croatia surged ahead midway through the third quarter as Jaleen Smith (190-SG-1994, college: UNH) gave them a 56-52 lead. But Finland regained control and ensured a 67-65 advantage heading into the fourth period. Jaleen Smith once again gave Croatia a 72-71 lead early in the fourth term. But Lauri Markkanen, Henri Kantonen (198-SG-1997, agency: Blacktop Management) and Shawn Huff (198-SF-1984, college: Valpo) connected for Finland as they grabbed a 80-77 advantage. Edon Maxhuni (188-PG-1998, college: LBSU) and Sasu Salin (190-SG-1991) extended the lead to 8 points 85-77 with just over three minutes to go. Lauri Markkanen followed with a layup as Finland established a double-digit lead and rallied to the victory. Sasu Salin finished with 17 points for the winning side. Bojan Bogdanovic (201-SF-1989) answered with 23 points for Croatia. Jaleen Smith tossed in 17 points in the loss.

Italy came up with an emotional and inspiring performance to see off Serbia in Round of 16 clash at 2022 EuroBasket tonight. Marco Spissu (184-PG-1995) went red hot from beyond the arc to come up with 22 points and led the Azzurri to a surprising victory in Berlin.
Serbia looked well poised to prove their favourites status early in the game. They sank 28 points in the first period to open an 8-point lead. Serbia opened a double-digit lead early in the second period. Italy managed to narrow the deficit to three points before Serbia responded to take a 51-45 halftime advantage. Nikola Jokic (213-C-1995, agency: BeoBasket) gave Serbia a 57-47 advantage in the third period. But Marco Spissu hit three triples in a row to give Italy a 66-63 lead with under three minutes left in the third term and all of that after Italy lost their head coach following the second technical foul. Serbia eked out a narrow 68-66 lead heading into the fourth stanza. Italy though opened the fourth term on a 16-2 run to take a comfortable 82-70 advantage. Italy controlled the pace throughout the reminder of the contest keeping Serbia at bay and driving to the victory. Nicolo Melli (205-F/C-1991) produced 21 points, while Simone Fontecchio (203-SF-1995) added 19 points for the Azzurri. Nikola Jokic answered with 32 points and 13 rebounds for Serbia. Vasilije Micic (196-PG-1994, agency: BeoBasket) tossed in 16 points in the defeat.

Greece completed the quarterfinal slate at 2022 EuroBasket. They overcame pesky Czech Republic in a hard-fought Round of 16 battle in Berlin tonight.
It was a close action throughout the first period. The teams traded baskets as the scoreboard read 20-20 after ten minutes. The lead changed hands several times throughout the second period before Czech Republic surged ahead for a 45-41 halftime advantage. And once again the teams went neck and neck throughout the third quarter. The Czechs secured a 67-63 advantage heading into the fourth stanza. But Greece used a 15-3 run early in the fourth period to take a 78-70 lead. They extended the gap at 10-point mark 88-78 with under two minutes left in regulation. Giannis Antetokounmpo (211-F-1994, agency: Octagon Europe) nailed 5 points late in regulation helping Greece get away with a difficult win at the end. Giannis Antetokounmpo produced 27 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists for the Hellenes. Nick Calathes (196-PG-1989, college: Florida) had 14 points in the victory. Czech Republic answered with 21 points from Jan Vesely (213-C-1990, agency: BeoBasket). Vojtech Hruban (202-SF-1989) contributed 17 points.

2022 EuroBasket continued to present the fans with the games to remember. France and Turkey clashed in an instant classic Round of 16 game in Berlin today. France survived an overtime drama to see off Turkey in the opening game of the day. Rudy Gobert (216-C-1992) tallied 20 points and 17 rebounds to lead les Bleus.
France looked solid and determined in the first period. Les Bleus grabbed an 18-8 lead late in the first period. France extended the lead to as many as 14 points early in the second term 34-20. But Turkey managed to narrow the gap at 8-point mark at halftime 35-43. Turkey then went on a stunning 19-0 run to cap the third term and turned the deficit into an 8-point lead. France however quickly cut the deficit and Thomas Heurtel (189-PG-1989) put them within one 63-64 midway through the period. The teams went neck and neck in the reminder of the regulation. Evan Fournier (198-G/F-1992) gave France 73-72 with just over a minute to go. But he fouled Furkan Korkmaz (201-G/F-1997) shooting a three at the other end and the 76ers' guard gave Turkey a 75-73 lead. Furkan Korkmaz and Thomas Heurtel exchanged points but Tim Luwawu committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Cedi Osman (204-F-1995) to give a golden chance for Turkey to seal the win with 12 seconds to go. But Cedi Osman missed two free throws and then Ahmet Tuncer (193-G-1993) lost the ball and France capitalised with Rudy Gobert dunking the ball and sending the game into an improbable overtime. Rudy Gobert scored four quick points in the extra period to give les Bleus an 83-79 lead. The centre soon ensured an 87-82 advantage for France. But once again Turkey responded as Ahmet Tuncer converted a layup and then Furkan Korkmaz put them within one point 86-87 with 38 seconds remaining. Rudy Gobert missed two free throws but Furkan Korkmaz could not capitalise losing the ball on the final possession. Evan Fournier and Thomas Heurtel finished with 13 points each for France. Ahmet Tuncer answered with 22 points for Turkey. Furkan Korkmaz provided 18 points in the loss.

Luka Doncic (201-G-1999) sent Slovenia to the Quarterfinals of the 2022 EuroBasket. He erupted for 35 points as his team beat Belgium 88-72. Germany outscored Montenegro at the Berlin Arena at the 2022 EuroBasket. They advanced to the Quarterfinals with an 85-79 win.
The hosts opened the game with a 19-10 run and dominated the whole first half. They added massive 29-14 surge and enjoyed a 48-24 halftime advantage. Montenegro however was too far to give and took control in the second half. They won the third period 26-19 as Marko Simonovic (210-C-1999) nailed tree for 65-50. Spain sealed their 2022 EuroBasket quarterfinal ticket surviving an overtime drama against Lithuania in Berlin tonight. Lorenzo Brown (196-PG-1990, college: NC State) sank 28 points and dished out 8 assists to lead the winners.
The teams went neck and neck throughout the first period. Lukas Lekavicius (180-PG-1994) capped the period with a three-pointer to give Lithuania a 20-19 lead. The lead changed hands throughout the second period. Lithuania managed to finally open a 7-point lead 43-36. They arrived at halftime up by 5 points 45-40. The Baltic team stretched the margin to 9 points midway though the third term 53-44. Spain narrowed the gap at 3-point mark later in the period before Lithuania ensured a 68-63 lead at the break. Lorenzo Brown finally tied things at 78 with just over two minutes remaining in regulation. Xabier Lopez-Arostegui (200-SF-1997) then gave Spain an 80-78 lead. Ignas Brazdeikis (201-SF-1999, college: Michigan) responded with a triple to put Lithuania in front 81-80 but Garuba tipped the ball in to make it 82-81 for Spain with 16 seconds left in regulation. Willy Hernangomez (210-C-1994) split free throws giving a chance for Lithuania and they capitalised as Ignas Brazdeikis tipped the ball in at the buzzer forcing overtime. But it was Lorenzo Brown's show in the extra period. The guard scored 12 points and carried Spain to a hard-fought victory at the end. Willy Hernangomez produced 21 points and 8 rebounds for the winning side. Mindaugas Kuzminskas (205-F-1989) answered with 18 points for Lithuania. Lukas Lekavicius and Domantas Sabonis (209-PF-1996, college: Gonzaga) had 15 points each in the defeat.
