Everything could happen in Beograd at the game between two tied teams. Both eighth ranked Lithuanian Zalgiris and 7th ranked Serbian Crvena Zvezda had identical 1-4 record. But Crvena Zvezda was not able to use a home court advantage and was edged by the opponent from Kaunas 70-68 on Thursday night. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 20-13. But Crvena Zvezda won second period 21-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Zalgiris made 8 blocks. It was a good game for American James Anderson (198-89, college: Oklahoma St.) who led his team to a victory with 22 points and 5 rebounds. Paulius Jankunas (205-84) contributed with 11 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Center Boban Marjanovic (222-88, agency: Beo Basket) replied with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) and American guard Marcus Williams (191-85, college: Connecticut) added 9 points, 7 assists and 4 steals in the effort for Crvena Zvezda. Crvena Zvezda's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Defending Lithuanian champion (2-4) moved-up to fifth place in Group E, which they share with ALBA and Galatasaray. Crvena Zvezda at the other side dropped to the bottom position with five games lost. Zalgiris will face league's second-placed Real Madrid at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Crvena Zvezda will play against Panathinaikos (#3) in Athens and hope to win that game.
