There was a small surprise when eighth ranked Spanish Unicaja Malaga (1-5) defeated at home 5th ranked Russian BC Nizhny Novgorod (2-4) 85-76 on Friday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 5-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 85-76. Unicaja Malaga made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. BC Nizhny Novgorod was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a good game for Uruguayan-Italian point guard Jayson Granger (188-89) who led his team to a victory with 29 points and 5 assists. American forward Caleb Green (203-85, college: ORU) contributed with 16 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Granger is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Unicaja Malaga players scored in double figures. American forward Trey Thompkins (208-90, college: Georgia) replied with a double-double by scoring 27 points and 13 rebounds and American-Montenegrin point guard Taylor Rochestie (185-85, college: Washington St.) added 24 points and 6 assists in the effort for BC Nizhny Novgorod. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Unicaja Malaga left bottom position moving up to seventh place in Group F, which they share with EA7 Armani. BC Nizhny Novgorod at the other side keeps the fifth position with four games lost. Unicaja Malaga will face higher ranked Laboral Kutxa (#5) in Vitoria in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. BC Nizhny Novgorod will play at home against Olympiacos where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
