There was a small surprise when fourth ranked Turkish Abdullah Gul (4-2) won against top-ranked Russian UMMC Ekaterinburg (5-1) in Kayseri 68-54 on Thursday. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in Group B. The hosts trailed by 10 points after first quarter, but they stormed back and won the game by 14 points. It was a good game for American-Turkish LaToya Sanders (191-86, college: N.Carolina) who led her team to a victory with 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. American center Janel McCarville (188-82, college: Minnesota, agency: Josep and Nicolas) contributed with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. American center Brittney Griner (203-90, college: Baylor) replied with 21 points and 7 rebounds and Vincentian-Spanish center Sancho Lyttle (193-83, college: Houston) added 12 points and 12 rebounds in the effort for UMMC Ekaterinburg. UMMC Ekaterinburg's coach rotated eleven players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Abdullah Gul moved-up to second place in Group B, which they share with Nadezhda O. and USK Praha. Defending Russian champion UMMC Ekaterinburg still keeps top position with one game lost. Abdullah Gul will face Wisla Krakow (#7) on the road in the next round where they are favorite. UMMC Ekaterinburg will play against USK Praha (#4) and hope to win that game.
