Regular Season Round 9: Villeneuve - Avenida 78-66

No shocking result in a game when fifth ranked French Villeneuve D'Ascq (5-4) beat at home 7th ranked Spanish Perfumerias Avenida (2-7) 78-66 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Villeneuve D'Ascq. Perfumerias Avenida was better in second period 12-10. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. It was a great shooting night for Villeneuve D'Ascq especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 72.7 percentage. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Villeneuve D'Ascq made 9 blocks. It was a good game for guard Virginie Bremont (177-87, agency: Comsport) who led her team to a victory with 19 points, 8 assists and 5 steals. Gabonese-French power forward Geraldine Robert (183-80, agency: Comsport) contributed with 14 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Four Villeneuve D'Ascq players scored in double figures. Villeneuve D'Ascq's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Jamaican power forward Vanessa Gidden (192-85, college: Hofstra, agency: Josep and Nicolas) answered with 16 points and 8 rebounds and Romanian forward Gabriela Marginean (182-87, college: Drexel, agency: LBM Management) added 19 points in the effort for Perfumerias Avenida. Villeneuve D'Ascq moved-up to fourth place in Group A, which they share with Galatasaray. Perfumerias Avenida at the other side keeps the seventh position with seven games lost. Villeneuve D'Ascq will face league's leader Fenerbahce in Istanbul in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Perfumerias Avenida will play at home against MKB Euroleasing (#8) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
