Regular Season Round 5: Fenerbahce - Unics 73-81

The most surprising game was the first loss of Turkish Fenerbahce (4-1) in Istanbul on Wednesday night. Hosts were defeated by fifteenth ranked Russia Unics Kazan (1-4) 81-73. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Fenerbahce. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 20-15. But Fenerbahce won second period 24-23. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Unics Kazan won last quarter 18-11. They dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Fenerbahce's 30. They outrebounded Fenerbahce 34-22 including 23 on the defensive glass. American Keith Langford (193-83, college: Kansas) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 28 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and Belarusian center Artsiom Parakhouski (211-87, college: Radford) chipped in 20 points and 12 rebounds (on 9-of-10 shooting from the field). American-Turkish point guard Bobby Dixon (178-83, college: Troy, agency: BeoBasket) responded with 23 points and 5 assists and Czech power forward Jan Vesely (213-90) scored 17 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field). Four Fenerbahce players scored in double figures. Unics Kazan left bottom position moving up to fourteenth place, which they share with Zalgiris. Defending Turkish champion Fenerbahce keeps the second position with one game lost. They share it with Real Madrid. Unics Kazan is looking forward to face higher ranked Crvena Zvezda (#10) in Beograd in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Fenerbahce will play on the road against Baskonia (#8) in Vitoria and is hoping to win this game.
