Regular Season Round 7: Real Madrid - Panathinaikos 87-84

Important game to mention about took place in Madrid. Fourth ranked Spanish Real Madrid (5-2) saved a 3-point victory at home edging 3rd placed Greek Panathinaikos (4-3) 87-84 on Wednesday evening. It was a key game for the second position in the league. It looked good early as Panathinaikos took a 2-point small lead at the end of first quarter. But then Real Madrid had a 32-27 second period charge getting the lead and Panathinaikos were not able to take back game control losing it eventually 84-87. Real Madrid made 16-of-19 charity shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Panathinaikos were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for Sergio Llull (190-87) who led his team to a victory scoring 30 points and 4 assists. Mexican power forward Gustavo Ayon (207-85, college: San Jose St.) helped adding 8 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. At the losing side American-Greek point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) responded with 15 points and 9 assists and center Ioannis Bourousis (214-83) scored 13 points and 9 rebounds. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Defending Spanish champion moved-up to second place, which they share with Darussafaka. Panathinaikos at the other side dropped to the fourth position with three games lost. They share it with 5 other teams. Real Madrid will play against FC Barcelona (#8) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Panathinaikos' supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Athens Olympiacos.
