Not a big story in a game in Athens where 13th ranked Spanish FC Barcelona (6-11) was defeated by third ranked Greek Panathinaikos (12-5) 84-75 on Thursday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 2-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 84-75. Panathinaikos dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to FC Barcelona's 38. American-Greek point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 12 assists and 5 steals for the winners and American James Gist (206-86) chipped in 17 points and 6 rebounds. French point guard Thomas Heurtel (189-89, agency: BeoBasket) responded with 18 points and French Adrien Moerman (202-88) scored 11 points and 6 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending Greek champion moved-up to second place, which they share with Olympiacos. Loser FC Barcelona dropped to the twelfth position with 11 games lost. Panathinaikos will face Fenerbahce (#5) in Istanbul in the next round. FC Barcelona will play on the road against Valencia Basket (#14) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
