Regular Season Round 18: Valencia - FC Barcelona 81-76

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 13th ranked FC Barcelona (6-12) was defeated on the road by fourteenth ranked Valencia Basket (6-12) 81-76 on Tuesday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 22-14. But FC Barcelona won second period 22-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Valencia Basket made 21-of-21 free shots (100 percent !!!) during the game. Valencia Basket outrebounded FC Barcelona 42-24 including a 28-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was Montenegrin power forward Bojan Dubljevic (205-91, agency: BeoBasket) who scored 19 points and 7 rebounds. Guard Rafael Martinez (190-82) chipped in 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was French point guard Thomas Heurtel (189-89, agency: BeoBasket) who recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and 10 assists and power forward Pierre Oriola (206-92) added 15 points respectively. Four FC Barcelona players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. Defending Spanish champion moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with defeated FC Barcelona. Valencia Basket will face higher ranked Zalgiris (#6) in Kaunas in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.
