Very expected game in Athens where 11th ranked Spanish Valencia Basket (11-18) was crushed by fifth ranked Greek Panathinaikos (18-11) 75-56 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Panathinaikos. Valencia Basket was better in second period 18-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. American-Greek point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 assists for the winners and American center Adreian Payne (208-91, college: Michigan St.) chipped in 12 points and 8 rebounds. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Icelandic center Tryggvi Hlinason (215-97) responded with 8 points and 6 rebounds and Canadian-Dutch forward Aaron Doornekamp (201-85, agency: Interperformances) scored 8 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Panathinaikos have a solid series of four victories in a row. Defending Greek champion moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Real Madrid. Defending Spanish champion Valencia Basket keeps the eleventh position with 18 games lost. Panathinaikos will face Armani Milano (#14) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Valencia Basket will play against Maccabi T-A and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
