Regular Season Round 9: Baskonia - Panathinaikos 86-77

We should mention about the upset which took place in Vitoria, where higher ranked Greek Panathinaikos (5-4) lost to twelfth ranked Spanish Baskonia (3-6) in a road game 77-86 on Friday. Panathinaikos trailed by 12 points at halftime and as many as 18 after three quarters before a 22-13 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 77-86 at the end of the game. Baskonia outrebounded Panathinaikos 30-19 including 20 on the defensive glass. It was a great shooting night for Baskonia especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 62.5 percentage. The best player for the winners was Georgian Tornike Shengelia (206-91) who scored 16 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. French center Vincent Poirier (210-93) chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds. Five Baskonia players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was American Keith Langford (193-83, college: Kansas) who recorded 33 points (!!!) and guard Nikos Pappas (194-90) added 16 points respectively. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Baskonia moved-up to tenth place, which they share with Zalgiris and Khimki. Defending Greek champion Panathinaikos dropped to the seventh position with four games lost. Baskonia will face higher ranked Anadolu Efes (#4) in Istanbul in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
