Regular Season Round 9: Venezia - Cukurova 70-61

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both seventh ranked Italian Venezia and 6th ranked Turkish Cukurova had identical 2-6 record. This time Venezia used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Mersin 70-61 on Wednesday night. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 21-10. But Cukurova won third quarter 20-16. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Venezia made 17-of-19 free shots (89.5 percent) during the game. Venezia outrebounded Cukurova 41-24 including a 32-19 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Latvian center Anete Steinberga (190-90, college: UTEP, agency: LBM Management) stepped up and scored 18 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and American guard Jolene Anderson (173-86, college: Wisconsin) chipped in 13 points and 9 rebounds. The best for the losing side was Spanish guard Leonor Rodriguez-Manso (180-91, college: FSU) with 19 points and 5 rebounds and American-Turkish LaToya Sanders (191-86, college: UNC) scored 15 points. Venezia (3-6) moved-up to fifth place in Group A, which they share with Castors Braine. Cukurova lost their fifth game in a row. They dropped to the seventh position with seven games lost. Venezia will face league's leader UMMC Ekaterinburg on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Cukurova will play against the league's second-placed USK Praha (#2) and hope to win that game.
