Regular Season Round 20: Panathinaikos - Zalgiris 96-94

Sixteenth-ranked Lithuanian Zalgiris (6-14) gave a tough game to sixth ranked Greek Panathinaikos (12-8) in Athens on Friday. Panathinaikos managed to secure only two-point victory 96-94. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 25-17 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Panathinaikos made 17-of-19 free shots (89.5 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. The best player for the winners was American-Montenegrin point guard Tyrese Rice (185-87, college: Boston Coll.) who scored 20 points and 6 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line). American-Greek point guard Nick Calathes (197-89, college: Florida) chipped in a double-double by scoring 14 points and 11 assists. Guard Thomas Walkup (193-92, college: SF Austin) produced 16 points and 7 assists and point guard Lukas Lekavicius (180-94) added 16 points and 4 assists respectively for the guests. Five Panathinaikos and four Zalgiris players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Defending Greek champion maintains sixth position with 12-8 record. Defending Lithuanian champion Zalgiris keep the sixteenth place with 14 games lost. They share the position with Bayern and Zenit. Panathinaikos will meet at home ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (#12) in the next round where they are favorite. Zalgiris will play against ALBA Berlin (#14) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
