Regular Season Round 8: CSKA - Baskonia 89-86

A very close game took place in Moscow between Russian CSKA and Spanish Baskonia. Fifth ranked CSKA (5-3) got a very close home victory over 13th ranked Baskonia (2-4). CSKA managed to escape with a 3-point win 89-86 on Thursday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Baskonia won third quarter 23-19. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. CSKA forced 23 Baskonia turnovers. Strangely Baskonia outrebounded CSKA 33-18 including 21 on the defensive glass. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Darrun Hilliard (198-93, college: Villanova, agency: Wasserman) who helped to win the game recording 31 points and Georgian forward Tornike Shengelia (206-91, agency: Wasserman) who added 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. Senegalese-French center Youssoupha Fall (221-95) responded with 19 points and 8 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) and American guard Pierria Henry (193-93, college: Charlotte) scored 17 points and 5 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. CSKA have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Olympiacos and Zalgiris. Baskonia lost third consecutive game. Defending Spanish champion dropped to the fourteenth position with four games lost. They share it with Panathinaikos. CSKA will meet Zalgiris (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Baskonia will play against Fenerbahce (#9) and hope to secure a win.
