Regular Season Round 8: Panathinaikos - Anadolu Efes 77-80

A very interesting game took place in Athens. It ended with only three-point home defeat of 14th ranked Greek Panathinaikos (2-4) to tenth ranked Turkish Anadolu Efes (4-3) 80-77 on Friday evening. Panathinaikos were ahead by 4 points at the halftime before a 23-14 third quarter run of Anadolu Efes. The winners were led by Serbian guard Vasilije Micic (196-94, agency: BeoBasket) who scored that evening 33 points (!!!) and Croatian guard Krunoslav Simon (197-85) supported him with 12 points. Even 16 points and 6 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) by center Georgios Papagiannis (220-97) did not help to save the game for Panathinaikos. Italian forward Aaron White (206-92, college: Iowa, agency: BeoBasket) added 11 points and 8 rebounds for the hosts. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Panathinaikos' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Anadolu Efes have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending Turkish champion moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Valencia. Defending Greek champion Panathinaikos keep the fourteenth position with four games lost. Anadolu Efes' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Bayern Muenchen at home and it may be quite challenging game. Panathinaikos will play against Valencia Basket (#7) and hope to win that game.
