Regular Season Round 13: Panathinaikos - Zalgiris 69-81

There was no surprise in Athens where 15th ranked Greek Panathinaikos (4-8) were defeated by twelfth ranked Lithuanian Zalgiris (6-7) 81-69 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Zalgiris. Panathinaikos was better in second period 21-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Zalgiris shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 65.0 percentage. Guard Marius Grigonis (198-94) stepped up and scored 24 points and 6 rebounds for the winners and American forward Nigel Hayes (203-94, college: Wisconsin) chipped in 14 points. At the losing side center Georgios Papagiannis (220-97) responded with a double-double by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds and Serbian guard Nemanja Nedovic (192-91, agency: BeoBasket) scored 12 points and 4 assists. Four Panathinaikos players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending Lithuanian champion moved-up to eleventh place. Defending Greek champion Panathinaikos keep the fifteenth position with eight games lost. Zalgiris will face higher ranked Baskonia (#10) in Vitoria in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Panathinaikos will play at home against Real Madrid (#5) and hope to win that game.
