A very interesting game took place in Berlin. It ended with only three-point home defeat of 13th ranked German ALBA Berlin (6-10) to eighth ranked Lithuanian Zalgiris (10-7) 74-71 on Tuesday evening. Guest team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. ALBA Berlin was ahead by 6 points at the halftime before a 23-11 third quarter run of Zalgiris. French center Joffrey Lauvergne (211-91, agency: BeoBasket) nailed 16 points and 7 rebounds for the winning side and American forward Nigel Hayes (203-94, college: Wisconsin) accounted for 18 points and 6 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Italian forward Simone Fontecchio (203-95) came up with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and forward Niels Giffey (200-91, college: UConn, agency: BeoBasket) added 11 points and 7 rebounds respectively for ALBA Berlin in the defeat. Four ALBA Berlin players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Zalgiris. Defending Lithuanian champion moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Valencia. ALBA Berlin lost their third game in a row. Defending German champion dropped to the fourteenth position with ten games lost. Zalgiris' next round opponent will be bottom-ranked Khimki (#18) at home which should be an easy win for them. ALBA Berlin will play against Baskonia (#9) and hope to win that game.
