Regular Season Round 19: Panathinaikos - ASVEL 88-71

Everything could happen in Athens at the game between two tied teams. Both seventeenth ranked Greek Panathinaikos and 16th ranked French ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket had identical 5-12 record. This time Panathinaikos used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Villeurbanne 88-71. The game was mostly controlled by Panathinaikos. ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket was better in second period 21-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Panathinaikos made 16-of-19 charity shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Panathinaikos outrebounded ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket 38-26 including a 28-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket's players. Panathinaikos brought some defensive toughness making 7 blocks. It was a very good performance for Serbian guard Nemanja Nedovic (192-91, agency: BeoBasket) who helped to win the game recording 33 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Center Georgios Papagiannis (220-97) contributed with 18 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners. Center Moustapha Fall (216-92) answered with 10 points and 9 rebounds and American point guard Norris Cole (188-88, college: CSU) added 15 points in the effort for ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending Greek champion (6-12) moved-up to fifteenth place, which they share with Crvena Zvezda. ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the seventeenth position with 13 games lost. Panathinaikos' next round opponent will be higher ranked Fenerbahce (#11) in Istanbul and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket will play on the road against Olympiacos (#8) in Pireus and hope to win that game.
