Regular Season Round 23: Zenit - Anadolu Efes 76-67
Date: January 27, 2022
There was no surprise in Sankt Petersburg where 8th ranked Turkish Efes (10-11) were defeated by fourth ranked Russian Zenit (13-7) 76-67 on Thursday. The hosts trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 1-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 76-67. Zenit dominated on the defensive end, holding Efes to just 6 points in third quarter. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a great evening for American power forward Alexander Poythress (203-93, college: Kentucky) who led his team to a victory scoring 21 points and 9 rebounds. His fellow American import guard Billy Baron (188-90, college: Canisius, agency: BeoBasket) helped adding 13 points and 5 assists. Serbian point guard Vasilije Micic (196-94, agency: BeoBasket) responded with 22 points and 6 rebounds and Croatian Krunoslav Simon (197-85) scored 17 points. Both coaches tested many bench players saving starting five for next games. Zenit maintains fourth place with 13-7 record. Defending Turkish champion Efes dropped to the ninth position with 11 games lost. Zenit will meet Baskonia (#15) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Efes will play against CSKA (#5) in Moscow and hope to secure a win.
