Regular Season Round 29: Zalgiris - Olympiacos 72-74

Ninth-ranked Lithuanian Zalgiris (15-14) used its home court advantage to challenge first ranked Greek Olympiacos (21-8) in Kaunas on Thursday. The visitors from Piraeus managed to secure only two-point victory 74-72. However their fans expected much easier game. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Zalgiris. Olympiacos forced 20 Zalgiris turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Cypriot-Bulgarian forward Aleksandar Vezenkov (206-1995) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points and 8 rebounds. American-Azerbaijani Shaquielle McKissic (196-1990, college: Arizona St.) contributed with 18 points for the winners. Olympiacos' coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Latvian Rolands Smits (207-1995) answered with 18 points and 6 rebounds and Edgaras Ulanovas (199-1992) added 12 points and 6 assists in the effort for Zalgiris. Olympiacos have a solid series of three victories in a row. Defending Greek champion maintains first place with 21-8 record. Zalgiris at the other side dropped to the eighth position with 14 games lost. They share it with Baskonia. Olympiacos are looking forward to face Partizan (#7) in Beograd in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Zalgiris will play on the road against Fenerbahce in Istanbul and are hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
