Decimal, Fractional, American: What Betting Odds Mean

Every odds format says one thing in a different accent. Below is how decimal prices convert into fractions and moneylines, and why a roulette payout is one more price in disguise.

Olympiacos beat Real Madrid 92-85 in Athens on May 24 to win the 2026 EuroLeague title.

Real Madrid evened things up in Abu Dhabi on September 19. Their 93-89 win over the champions came in the first EuroLeague SuperCup final, a brand-new preseason trophy. Before either tip-off, a fan in Madrid and another in Las Vegas could have checked the same game and seen two numbers that look nothing alike.

A Spanish sportsbook quotes decimals like 2.40. London betting shops, where fractions are still the house style, would chalk that price up as 7/5. A Nevada counter prints +140 for that identical outcome.

Sports betting doesn't own this math. Casino tables have quoted payouts as ratios for generations – just look at the live roulette and blackjack tables at online casinos like Smokos, streamed from Evolution and Pragmatic Play Live studios, which pay out on exactly those terms.

One Price, Three Formats

Take a hypothetical line for the Round 13 rematch on November 20, when Olympiacos hosts Real Madrid in Piraeus, and say a book has Olympiacos at 1.60 and Madrid at 2.40.

Decimal odds give the total return per unit staked, stake included. A $10 bet on Olympiacos at 1.60 returns $16, which is $6 of profit plus your original $10. Any decimal under 2.00 marks the side the book rates as favorite.

Fractional odds strip the stake out and quote profit only. Subtract 1 from the decimal and you're there: 1.60 becomes 0.60, or 3/5, meaning $3 profit for every $5 staked. Madrid at 2.40 converts to 7/5. A British punter would call Olympiacos odds-on, because the stake is bigger than the potential profit.

American odds pivot around $100, where a minus sign is the amount you'd need to stake to win $100, so Olympiacos at 1.60 converts to -167, and a plus sign is the profit on a $100 stake, which gives Madrid +140. It's the least intuitive of the three to European eyes, and fans on this side of the Atlantic aren't shy about saying so.

Fractional purists have a fair point, by the way. A price of 100/30 is exact, while its decimal twin, 4.33, is rounded off at the second decimal place. On a big enough stake those missing cents add up. Nobody's retiring on the difference, though.

Five conversions are worth committing to memory, and they cover nearly every price you'll see on a board:

  1. Decimal to fractional: subtract 1 from 2.50 and you're left with 1.50, or 3/2.
  2. For decimals of 2.00 or above, multiply the profit part by 100 to get a plus moneyline (2.50 is +150).
  3. Divide -100 by the profit part below 2.00, turning 1.50 into -200.
  4. Even money converts to 2.00, or +100.
  5. To find the implied probability, divide 1 by the decimal price, which is how 1.60 becomes 62.5%.

Where Casino Payouts Fit

Casino games skip the moving line. A European roulette wheel has 37 pockets, numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero, and a straight-up bet on one number pays 35 to 1.

Convert that and it's 36.00 in decimal or +3500 as a moneyline, which implies a 1-in-36 chance. But the real chance is 1 in 37. That gap is the wheel's 2.70% house edge. Unlike a sportsbook margin, it doesn't budge for injury news or a flood of money on one side.

Standard blackjack tables pay a natural at 3 to 2, or 2.50 in decimal. Baccarat's banker bet pays even money minus a 5% commission, which works out to 0.95 to 1 and converts to 1.95.

Money-wheel titles are the cleanest example. InterGame's coverage of the Crazy Time launch noted that Evolution developed it from its earlier Dream Catcher wheel. On both wheels the number segments pay their face value to 1, and a bet on the 10 pays 10 to 1, or 11.00 in decimal, if the wheel stops there.

Both titles are in the Smokos live lobby, next to Evolution's Dragon Tiger and Dynasty Speed Baccarat from Pragmatic Play Live.

What the Numbers Imply

Flip a decimal price upside down and you get the probability the book is pricing in, and on the hypothetical line 1 ÷ 1.60 is 62.5% and 1 ÷ 2.40 is 41.7%.

Add them together and you get 104.2%. A basketball game can't end in a tie, which means two outcomes adding up past 100% is impossible. The extra 4.2% is the bookmaker's margin, also known as the overround or vig.

Karl Whelan, an economics professor and author of the betting book Fine Margins, set out how to calculate the bookmaker's profit margin in a July 16, 2026 post.

“Understanding those margins is the key to seeing precisely how sports betting works,” he wrote.

His sharper point is about a shortcut. Online calculators commonly subtract 1 from the overround, which would give this line a 4.2% margin, but the correct figure is 1 minus 1 divided by the overround. That's exactly 4.0% here, the shortcut overstates it by almost a fifth of a point. At bigger margins the error grows fast. An overround of 1.5 means a 33% margin, not 50%.

US point spreads usually come priced at -110 on both sides, which is roughly 1.91 in decimal. Two sides at 52.4% each total 104.8%, a margin of about 4.5% using Whelan's method. Whelan concedes the formula assumes a book spreads its margin evenly across both sides, and real markets often don't, so treat 4.0% as a decent estimate rather than gospel.

Prices across a 380-game EuroLeague regular season move with form and fitness. This is where a review of the 2026 playoff races comes in handy before you trust any moneyline.

Inside the Smokos Lobby

Smokos launched in August 2026 as a casino-only platform, so there's no sportsbook attached and the odds math lives on its tables and reels. The lobby has 700+ games from studios including Pragmatic, Hacksaw Gaming, Play'n GO and Nolimit City. It plays in the browser on any device.

Its welcome package is a multi-deposit match with free spins, and the terms, from wagering to the max win, are listed on the offer page rather than tucked into the small print. And bettors who convert moneylines in their head will find a wagering requirement is a similar bit of arithmetic.

Withdrawals are processed instantly, with funds usually arriving within minutes. Players can fund an account with Visa, Mastercard, Skrill, Neteller or crypto such as BTC and USDT. An eleven-level loyalty program adds daily rakeback as players move up automatically. Cashback kicks in at the higher levels.

Players can also set deposit and loss limits, plus a cap on total wagers, over periods from a day to a month, and while a reduction takes effect immediately, an increase only applies after a 24-hour cooling-off period. Time-outs and self-exclusion cover longer breaks.
