POSTED BY: Eurobasket News
The FIBA U18 EuroBasket Division B wrapped up on August 2, 2026, with the Netherlands closing out a perfect tournament, and a full slate of classification games that produced two more last-gasp comebacks to go with everything else.
The Dutch never let Poland threaten in the final, weathering a competitive first quarter before pulling away for good, outscoring Poland 24-12 in the fourth quarter alone to seal a 71-57 win and the Division B title. Jayden Anike (195-SG-2008) led the way with 20 points on 7-of-17 shooting, Will Davis (200-F-2008) added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Teun van der Heijden (205-F-2008) chipped in 10 on an efficient 5-of-10. Poland got 10 points apiece from Szymon Lata (187-G-2009) and August Chalupa (190-G-2008, agency: SPORTFORUM Agency), but Hubert Swirydowicz (200-F-2009) so influential throughout the tournament managed just one point on a rough shooting night, and Poland's offense never found its rhythm against a Dutch defense that forced 23 turnovers. Belgium bounced back from its own semifinal heartbreak to claim bronze, routing Czechia 81-64 after trailing 0-6 in the opening minutes. Aaron Embo (180-G-2009) was magnificent down the stretch, finishing with 26 points and nine assists while going 11-of-12 from the line despite a quiet shooting night from the field, and Ilias Van Hecke (193-F-2008) buried seven threes for 21 points. Marek Houska (194-PG-2009)'s 21 points weren't enough for Czechia in defeat. The classification games produced two more dramatic finishes to close out the tournament. Georgia erased a 15-point third-quarter deficit against Croatia, with Mate Khatiashvili (192-G-2008) completing a triple-double of 13 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds and delivering the winning free throw with 1:26 left for an 83-81 win; Patrik Dorotic (208-F-2008)'s 12-point, 9-assist effort wasn't quite enough for the Croatians. Ukraine pulled off a similar rally against Cyprus, overturning a 15-point deficit to win 69-59 behind Yehor Koshelev (204-C-2008)'s 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Montenegro also came from behind in the fourth quarter to beat Switzerland 82-75, with Djordje Djukanovic (197-F-2008) scoring 19 and delivering the go-ahead basket down the stretch, while Hungary held off a late Romanian rally to win 67-63 behind Zalan Bartik (186-G-2008)'s 19 points on five made threes. Elsewhere, the results were more straightforward. Iceland routed Azerbaijan 91-73 despite a monstrous 23-point, 23-rebound effort from Emmanuel Agbason in the loss, with Patrik Birmingham (194-F-2008) scoring 20 and hitting four triples in an early burst. Sweden cruised past Norway 87-64 behind Simon Massamba (188-G-2009)'s 20 points, seven assists and five steals, and Ireland never trailed against Portugal in an 82-60 win, with Mark Burns (195-F-2008) scoring 18 and Aivaras Buzas (195-G-2008) adding 13. Great Britain overturned an early deficit to beat North Macedonia 83-73 behind Emmanuel Ahamefule's 16 points, and Finland pulled away late from Bosnia and Herzegovina for an 82-66 win, with Benjamin Passila (199-F-2008) exploding for 29 points on 7-of-11 shooting from three. |
