Cotie McMahon (183-F-2004) recorded 16 points to lead the champions. USA grabbed a 21-16 lead at the first break. Spain erased the deficit in the second quarter and tied things up at 34 heading into the second half. USA sank 20 points in the third period to eke out a 2-point lead. They limited Spain to just 14 points in the fourth stanza to get away with the trophy.
Chloe Kitts (190-F-2004) netted 15 points and collected 9 rebounds for USA.
Iyana Martin (172-PG-2006) answered with 19 points for Spain.
3-4 Place
Canada - France 80-73 OTCanada
outlasted France in overtime to step onto the podium in Spain. The
North American team claimed the third position behind 26 points from
Syla Swords (182-G-2006). France recorded a 22-15 lead after the first period. Canada
limited their opponents to just 8 points in the fourth term to force
overtime. They drained 12 points in the overtime to snatch the win. Toby
Fournier chipped in 15 points for Canada. France answered with 17
points from
Daniela Dibanzilua (172-SG-2004).
5-6 Place
Mali - Japan 73-61Mali
clinched the fifth position as they rallied past Japan in Spain
tonight. The African team got to a strong start. They built a 37-22
halftime advantage. Japan pulled within 5 points at the final
intermission but Mali sank 22 points in the fourth quarter and marched
to the win.
Maimouna Haidara (181-PF-2004) tallied 18 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists
for the winning side.
Haru Owaki (177-PF-2004) answered with 15 points for Japan.
7-8 Place
Lithuania - Czech Republic 50-76Czech
Republic crushed Lithuania to clinch the 7th position. Czech Republic
built a 37-25 halftime lead. They held Lithuania to just 25 points in
the second half to march to a comfortable win.
Valentyna Kadlecova (182-F-2004)
finished with 18 points, while
Charlotte Velichova (176-G-2004) added 14 point for
Czech Republic.
Gerda Raulusaityte (189-C-2004) answered with 12 points for
Lithuania.
9-10 Place
Australia - Germany 81-73Australia
held off Germany to claim the ninth overall position. Germany enjoyed a
45-39 halftime advantage. But Australia answered with a strong 42-28
second half run to secure the win.
Nyadiew Puoch (189-C-2004) and
Sophie Burrows (184-F/C-2004) had
18 points apiece for Australia.
Frieda Buehner (184-F/C-2004, college:
Florida) netted 19 points for
Germany.
11-12 Place
Egypt - Italy 56-64Italy
beat Egypt to earn the 11th position. Egypt led by one point after ten
minutes. But Italy used a 16-11 run in the second term to gain a 5-point
halftime advantage. They followed with a 21-17 rally in the fourth
stanza to ice the win.
Beatrice Caloro (177-G-2004) had 18 points, while Eleonora
Villa delivered 16 points for Italy.
Jana Sallman (189-F-2006) answered with 20
points and 15 rebounds for Egypt.
13-14 Place
Brazil - China 62-76China
earned the 13th overall position in Spain as they topped Brazil today.
China trailed by as many as 8 points ten minutes into the game. But they
ignited a strong 23-11 run in the fourth quarter to sneak past their
opponents.
Duoling Hu (175-G-2005) came up with 28 points to lead the winners. Ana De
Oliveira responded with 15 points for Brazil.
15-16 Place
Taiwan - Argentina 79-72 OTTaiwan
wrapped up their campaign with victory. They toppled Argentina in
overtime for the initial win in Spain.
Hsiao Yu-Wen (184-C-2005) posted 19 points and
14 rebounds to lead the Asian team. Chin-Huan Yu accounted for 16
points and 9 rebounds for the winners.
Nicole Tapari (172-G-2004) answered with 22
points and 7 rebounds for Argentina.
