Sirvydis's late heroics lead Rytas to EB ANGT title - May 20, 2018
In a thriller that came down to the final minute, U18 Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius won the 2017-18 Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament championship. Rytas U18 Stellazzurra Rome 76-71 at Stark Arena in Belgrade, Serbia, on Sunday morning to become the ANGT champion for the second time in club history. Rytas, which first won the title in 2012, became the fifth team to win multiple EB ANGT titles, joining Zalgiris Kaunas, CSKA Moscow, FMP Zeleznik and CFBB Paris. Deividas Sirvydis (200-G-00) netted 5 of his 18 points in the final 36 seconds to seal his team's win after Stellazzurra rallied from a double-digit deficit to tie the game late. Marek Blazevic (207-C-01) paced the winners with 20 points and 11 rebounds and Domantas Vilys (189-G-00) scored 11 points for Rytas. Luca Conti (196-F-00) led Stellazzurra with 22 points, Dalph Adem Panopio had 18 and Paul Herman Eboua (203-F-00) posted 17 points and 13 rebounds for Stellazzurra, which was the first Italian team to reach the title game since Montepaschi Siena in 2004. Vilys got Rytas going with a driving layup and a three-pointer. Sirvydis added a bomb from downtown for a 9-2 lead. Stellazzurra's fiery guard Dalph Adem Panopio revived his team with a driving layup and a jumper. Once Eboua heated up with a power basket and a dunk, Stellazzurra closed the gap to 11-10. Eboua kept pushing Stellazzurra and his layup tied it at 16-16, but a close basket by Mykolas Astrauskas (188-G-00) and a wild buzzer-beating triple by Sirvydis restored a 21-16 Rytas lead after 10 minutes. Luca Conti hit a jumper early in the second quarter, Eboua dunked and a three-pointer by Lorenzo Donadio (191-G-01) tied it again, 23-23. Sirvydis insisted from downtown and got help from Blazevic and Sarunas Valunta to make it 35-28. Russel Tchewa (210-C-00) hit a jump hook and Alessandro Cipolla (197-G/F-00, agency: SPORTlab Agency) split free throws, but Blazevic gave Rytas a 38-31 advantage at halftime. Blazevic and Gediminas Mokseckas (190-G-00) combined for all the points in a 6-0 run that gave Rytas its first double-digit lead, 44-31, right after the break. Eboua struck from beyond the arc and a three-point play by Conti gave Stellazzurra hope, but Blazevic kept pacing Rytas and free throws by Dilys made it 52-39 margin. Conti hit free throws and back-to-back three-pointers by Panopio brought Stellazzurra within 55-48. A jumper by Eboua and a tip-in by Erikas Jermolajevas (204-F-01) fixed the score at 57-50 after 30 minutes. Rytas struggled to score early in the fourth quarter, while Panopio got Stellazzurra within 59-57 with less than seven minutes left. Blazevic hit 4 free throws and Sirvydis added an off-balance jumper, but Conti made it 67-65 with three minutes to go. A layup by Yannick Nsoza and a big basket by Panopio tied the game at 69-69 with a minute and a half to go. Sirvydis stepped up with the go-ahead three-pointer and free throws by Astrauskas sealed the outcome.
U18 Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade extended its reign over Euroleague Basketball ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT Belgrade by beating rival U18 Partizan NIS Belgrade 90-59 for its eighth straight title in the Serbian capital. Tournament MVP Zoran Paunovic (200-F-00) led winners with 26 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists 3 steals and 2 blocks while Bojan Tomasevic (202-F-01) had 18 points and Veljko Radakovic (204-C-00) added 12 points as Zvezda increased its winning streak in qualifying tournament games to 35, dating back to 2011, and booked its ticket to the ANGT Finals in May in Belgrade. Zvezda joins ANGT L'Hospitalet winner U18 Divina Seguros Joventut, ANGT Kaunas champion U18 Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius and ANGT Munich victor U18 Real Madrid as the four automatic qualifiers to the ANGT Finals in May at the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four in Belgrade. Paunovic led the event in scoring with 24.5 points per game, steals with 3.3 per game and performance index rating with 33.3. Joining him on the all-tournament team are Marko Pecarski (208-C-00) of Partizan, Federica Miaschi of U18 Umana Reyer Venice, Kenan Kamenjas of U18 Spars Ziraat Bank Sarajevo and Luka Cerovina (201-F-00) of U18 Mega Bemax Belgrade. Miaschi was second in scoring (23.3 ppg.), third in rebounds (9.3 rpg.) and index rating (25.0). Pecarski also ranked among the top five in scoring (18.3 ppg.) and rebounds (8.5 rpg.), while Kamenjas was the top rebounder (14.3 rpg.) and Cerovina was second in steals (2.5 spg.) and blocks (1.5 bpg.) and third in assists (4.5 apg.). Mega Bemax placed third after beating U18 Anadolu Efes Istanbul 70-85. Aleksandar Langovic (206-F-01) collected 22 points and 9 rebounds, while Cerovina picked up 17 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals for Mega, which survived committing 32 turnovers. Bemax wasted a 20-point lead, but came back to dominate the fourth quarter. Eren Has (201-F-01) paced Efes with 15 points. U18 GBA Prague grabbed fifth place by beating Venice 55-72 for its best-ever finish in the tournament. Lubos Kovar (203-C-00) led the way for GBA with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Tomas Mikyska had 17 points. The key was GBA's defense holding Venice star Federico Miaschi to just 9 points on 3-of-15 shooting. Spars paced seventh by defeating U18 Cibona Zagreb 89-68. Tarik Biberovic scored 26 points with 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals and Kamenjas had 12 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 blocks for Spars, which picked up its first victory of the competition. ANGT: U18 Real Madrid rolls to place in Belgrade - Feb 11, 2018
The 2015 continental champion U18 Real Madrid booked its ticket to the Euroleague Basketball ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT Finals by beating ANGT Munich host side U18 FC Bayern Munich 57-77 in the championship game. Mario Nakic (197-F-01) led the way with 23 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for Madrid while Usman Garuba (203-G/F-02) collected 19 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks. Madrid reached its fifth straight ANGT Finals and joins U18 Divina Seguros Joventut Badalona and U18 Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius, which won the ANGT L'Hospitalet and ANGT Kaunas tournaments, respectively. Bayern got 16 points from Kilian Binapfil but they were not enough as the host side was out-rebounded 46-29. U18 ALBA Berlin grabbed third place in the tournament with a convincing 57-83 victory over U18 Olympiacos Piraeus. Franz Wagner (200-SF-01) scored 20 points and Hendrik Drescher (204-PF-00) tallied 19 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. U18 Darussafaka Istanbul claimed fifth place by racing past U18 Brose Bamberg 70-101. Mert Akay collected a triple-double with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists for Darussafaka. Debutant U18 ratiopharm Ulm secured a 7th place finish after picking up a 67-78 victory over U18 Real Betis Energia Plus Seville. U18 Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius captured the crown at the end of an exciting weekend at the Euroleague Basketball ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT Kaunas to secure its place at the ANGT Finals in Belgrade. Rytas routed U18 Stellazzurra Rome 55-76 in the Kaunas final led by Marek Blazevic (207-C-01), who posted 19 points and 11 rebounds. Rytas became the second team to advance to the ANGT Finals at the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four after U18 Divina Seguros Joventut Badalona, which won the ANGT Ciutat de L'Hospitalet tournament. Rytas guard Deividas Sirvydis (200-G-00) was named tournament MVP. He was joined by teammate Blazevic, Stellazzurra's Aristide Mouaha (190-G-00), Rokas Jokubaitis (191-G-00) of U18 Zalgiris Kaunas and Mathis Dossou-Yovo (202-C-00) of U18 CFBB Paris on the All-Tournament Team. U18 Zalgiris Kaunas rebounded from its first-ever loss in ANGT Kaunas history to grab third place with an 82-65 victory over U18 CSKA Moscow. Volodymyr Markovetskyy and Martynas Arlauskas both scored 17 points and Erikas Venskus added 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win. U18 CFBB Paris came back from 10 points down in the final 100 seconds to beat U18 Khimki Moscow Region 72-74 and grab fifth place. Yohan Choupas scored 16 points, including a three-pointer with 2.8 seconds left, to give the reigning ANGT champions the win and a 2-2 record in Kaunas. In the seventh-place game, U18 VEF Riga scored an 86-81 victory over U18 Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul for its first win of the weekend. U18 Divina Seguros Joventut Badalona booked its ticket to the Euroleague Basketball ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT Finals after exacting some revenge with a 77-74 victory over U18 FC Barcelona Lassa in the ANGT Ciutat de L'Hospitalet Final. The 2013 continental champion Joventut got 23 points from Arnau Parrado (200-C-00) in knocking off Barcelona a year after losing to its rivals in the ANGT L'Hospitalet Final. Manel Signes (200-F-00) chipped in 11 points and 13 rebounds and Aleix Haro Val added 13 points in helping Joventut claim its second ANGT L'Hospitalet crown since the tournament became a Finals qualifying tournament in 2007-08. Joventut will play at its first ANGT Finals since 2014. Barcelona was paced by Luka Samanic with 27 points, 16 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 3 blocks. Samanic was named the tournament MVP, but Barcelona didn't give him enough help though Nikola Zizic (208-C-00) added 11 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists in the loss. Samanic came out strong for Barcelona with 8 points as the reigning ANGT L'Hospitalet champs led 10-12. There were already five lead changes in the game by that point, but there would still be four more to come with Borja Fernandez (202-PF-01)'s three-pointer giving Barcelona a 17-19 lead, which the team extended to 17-23 after 10 minutes. Barcelona could not get any offense going early in the second quarter with 5 turnovers, while Joventut got 4 points from Parrado and a three from Halo Val in a 15-0 Joventut run to go up 32-23. Samanic finally got Barcelona on the board at the 4:22 minute mark to start a 3-11 spurt to cut the gap to 35-34. Joventut was held scoreless for the first two minutes of the second half and three-point plays from Tom Digbeu (193-G/F-01) and Samanic had Barcelona ahead 35-43. Joventut cut the margin to 3 points, but could not stop Samanic, whose three-pointer made it 50-59. Didac Cuevas came up with two triples at the other end, but Barcelona still was on top 57-63 going into the fourth quarter. Barcelona pushed the gap back out to 9, but Joventut charged back to tie the game at 69-69. Parrado followed with 6 points in helping Joventut nose ahead 76-72 with a minute to play.
