Mega beat NGS to celebrate first ANGT crown - May 21, 2022

U18 Mega Mozzart Belgrade became the 11th club to win the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament title by knocking off U18 Next Generation Select Team 82-61 in the 2022 ANGT Championship Game. It was third time lucky for the Serbian team, which had lost in the finale in 2017 and 2019 but gained control of the game in the Hala Sportova Ranko Zeravica with a 14-0 fourth quarter run. Nikola Djurisic (203-G-2004, agency: BeoBasket) scored 10 of his team-high 21 points in the big late run. Andrija Jelavic (207-F-2004, agency: BeoBasket) tallied 19 points and Bassala Bagayoko (208-C-2006) collected 19 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks for the new champion. Zacharie Perrin (207-C-2004) and Filip Jovic (204-F-2005) both scored 11 points in the losing effort. In the annuls of ANGT history, Mega joins other champions U18 Real Madrid, U18 CSKA Moscow (both three crowns), U18 Zalgiris Kaunas, U18 FMP Belgrade, U18 PFYM INSEP Paris, U18 Rytas Vilnius (all two), U18 FC Barcelona, U18 Crvena Zvedzda mts Belgrade, U18 KK Zagreb and U18 Joventut Badalona. Mega scored the first four points on layups by Jelavic and Djurisic. NGS failed to execute early on with four turnovers in its first six possessions before Perrin scored after more than 2 minutes. The selection team took its first lead on a Zinedin Mulic (199-SG-2004) three-pointer for 8-9. The lead changed hands four times - once each on triples by Djurisic and Mohamed Diawara (203-F/C-2005) - and it was 13-14. Mega was facing foul trouble at this point with four players on two fouls and also failed to score for the final 2:46 minutes of the first quarter and a second Mulic triple made it 13-19 after 10 minutes. After Alexandros Samontourov scored to open the second quarter, Bagayoko hit on Mega's first possession and it was 15-19. NGS picked up three points on an unsportsmanlike foul as the lead extended to 17-26. Bagayoko countered with two baskets as the score was 23-28 when NGS took advantage of its strength on the glass with four offensive rebounds which resulted in dunks by Perrin and Pacome Dadiet and a three-pointer from Jovic to push the advantage to 25-37. Andrej Musicki responded with a three-pointer and helped Mega close strong and go into the locker room down 32-39. Timotej Malovec (200-F-2004, agency: BeoBasket)'s three-pointer started the second half for Mega but a Perrin putback and Jovic triple had NGS ahead 40-44. Mega mounted a run though with Musicki scoring five points and Bagayoko picking up four in a 9-0 spurt to lead 49-44. A Jelavic three-point play extended the margin to 57-49 and the score was 57-51 after 30 minutes. NGS tried to close the gap with Samet Yigitoglu (206-C-2004) scoring twice inside and it was down to 60-55. Djurisic was not ready to let Mega lose a third ANGT Championship Game, hitting a jumper, a three-pointer, two layups and a free throw within six possessions as the lead ballooned to 74-55 with just 5 minutes left. The game was decided as Mega took away precious seconds with each possession down the stretch and the party in Belgrade was bound to be the pink of Mega.

ASVEL held Zvezda scoreless for the final 5:53 minutes to bring home the win and take first place at an ANGT for the first time in club history. With the victory, ASVEL will be playing at the ANGT Finals at the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four. Killian Malwaya (197-SG-2005) scored 22 points to pace five ASVEL scorers in double figures. Francois Wibaut (198-F-2005) had 15 points, Kymany Houinsou (196-G-2004) collected 14 points and 10 rebounds, Romain Parmentelot (190-G-2004) added 13 points, 7 assists and 5 steals and Noam Yaacov (186-PG-2004) chipped in 10 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists. It marked the fourth straight season that Zvezda did not finish first at its home ANGT after eight straight first place showings previously. Luka Vudragovic (194-F/G-2004) led Zvezda with 19 points but only had one point after the first quarter. Ognjen Matovic (198-F-2004) tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds and Lazar Djokovic (207-F-2004) had 10 points in the loss.
Vudragovic sandwiched three-pointers around a Matovic triple and Zvezda led 9-0 as ASVEL was held scoreless its first four possessions until Houinsou's emphatic dunk. The Zvezda barrage continued with a Djokovic triple and two more Vudragovic three-pointers for an 18-5 lead. ASVEL was able to punish Zvezda's miscues, getting 9 points off 5 turnovers and getting within 22-18. Vudragovic wasn't done with 2 more three-pointers as Zvezda went ahead up 28-20. Felix De Almeida (198-F-2005) and Malwaya connected from long range at the other end and the score was 30-26 after 10 minutes. The frantic pace settled in the second quarter with Noam hitting a three-pointer and Malwaya converting a three-point play to give ASVEL its first lead 30-32. Zvezda needed nearly 4 minutes to finally get on the scoreboard in the second quarter through Matovic. Another basket by Matovic had Zvezda up 37-34 as the scoring game to a screeching halt and the misses started to mount on both sides. Zvezda avoided the turnovers and was able to convert; Vladimir Pavlovic (185-G-2004) made a three-pointer and three-point play as the lead grew to 48-39 at the break.

ASVEL was the team hot from the outside to start the second half with Parmentelot hitting two three-pointers and his layup put the French side back ahead 50-52. It remained tight the rest of the quarter with 4 points being the biggest lead after Filip Radakovic's triple to make it 64-60. Zvezda held a 67-65 lead after 30 minutes. The gravity of every possession grew and Wibaut scored twice to even the game, 71-71. Nikola Topic put Zvezda ahead 73-71, but the ASVEL defense shined the rest of the way, stopping the host team on the final 12 possessions, including 7 turnovers, and Wibaut scored 4 points before Houinsou's big fastbreak dunk for a 73-79 lead with 31 seconds to play.
