Regular Season Round 2: VEF Riga - Szolnok 71-61

There was a small surprise when Latvian VEF Riga (1-1) defeated at home Hungarian Szolnok (1-1) 71-61 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by VEF Riga. Szolnok was better in second period 27-26. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Szolnok to just 7 points in fourth quarter. American point guard Gerald Robinson (185-89, college: Georgia) scored 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Arturs Berzins (204-88) chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Four VEF Riga players scored in double figures. VEF Riga's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Peter Lorant (206-85, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) responded with 14 points and 8 rebounds and Serbian guard Stefan Sinovec (195-88, agency: Beo Basket) scored 13 points and 7 rebounds. VEF Riga will face Zenit in Saint Petersburg in the next round. Szolnok will play at home against Un.Olimpija and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
