Regular Season Round 4: Besiktas - VEF Riga 88-71

The game between closely ranked teams ended with 4th ranked Latvian VEF Riga's (1-3) road loss to third ranked Turkish Besiktas (3-1) in Istanbul 71-88 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Besiktas. VEF Riga was better in third quarter 20-18. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Besiktas forced 19 VEF Riga turnovers. They shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 66.7 percentage. Besiktas looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. It was a very good performance for American guard Chris Lofton (188-86, college: Tennessee) who helped to win the game recording 22 points. The other American import power forward JaJuan Johnson (208-89, college: Purdue) contributed with 18 points for the winners. Janis Timma (201-92) replied with 18 points and Senegalese center Bamba Fall (217-86, college: SMU) added 13 points and 5 rebounds in the effort for VEF Riga. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Besiktas moved-up to second place in Group D. Loser VEF Riga dropped to the fifth position with three games lost. Besiktas will face bottom-ranked Szolnok in the next round. VEF Riga will play at home against Un.Olimpija and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
