Regular Season Round 7: Szolnok - VEF Riga 96-84

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both sixth ranked Hungarian Szolnok and 5th ranked Latvian VEF Riga had identical 1-5 record. This time Szolnok used a home court advantage and won against the opponent from Riga 96-84 on Wednesday night. The game was mostly controlled by Szolnok. VEF Riga was better in fourth quarter 31-25. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Szolnok shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 52.0 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 28 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Peter Lorant (206-85, agency: Laszlo Vinko Group) who helped to win the game recording 19 points and 6 rebounds. Serbian guard Stefan Sinovec (195-88, agency: Beo Basket) contributed with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Five Szolnok players scored in double figures. Janis Timma (201-92) answered with 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists and American point guard Gerald Robinson (185-89, college: Georgia) added 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the effort for VEF Riga. VEF Riga's coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Defending Hungarian champion (2-5) moved-up to fifth place in Group D. VEF Riga lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the bottom position with six games lost. Szolnok will face higher ranked Un.Olimpija (#3) in Ljubljana in the next round. VEF Riga will play at home against Zenit and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
