Regular Season Round 9: VEF Riga - Besiktas 64-76

Not a big story in a game when 6th ranked Latvian VEF Riga (1-8) was defeated at home by second ranked Turkish Besiktas (7-2) 76-64 on Tuesday. The guests trailed by 7 points at the halftime before their 42-23 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Besiktas shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 52.0 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was Puerto Rican-American swingman John Holland (195-88, college: Boston U.) who scored 18 points. American power forward JaJuan Johnson (208-89, college: Purdue) chipped in 15 points and 5 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was American point guard Gerald Robinson (185-89, college: Georgia) who recorded 17 points and 6 assists and point guard Ingus Jakovics (186-93, college: Liepaja-2) added 14 points respectively. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Besiktas maintains second place in Group D with 7-2 record behind leader Strasbourg. Loser VEF Riga stay at the bottom position with eight games lost. Besiktas will face Szolnok (#5) in Szolnok in the next round. VEF Riga will play on the road against Un.Olimpija in Ljubljana.
