Not a big story in a game when 4th placed Italian Umana Venezia (2-3) was edged at home by second ranked Spanish CAI Zaragoza (4-1) 79-77 on Wednesday. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Umana Venezia won third quarter 20-15. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. CAI Zaragoza made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. CAI Zaragoza outrebounded Umana Venezia 40-23 including 16 on the offensive glass. It was a great shooting night for CAI Zaragoza especially from behind the arc, where they had solid 55.0 percentage. The best player for the winners was Serbian power forward Stevan Jelovac (208-89, agency: Beo Basket) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. American guard Drake Diener (196-81, college: De Paul, agency: Priority Sports) chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds. American-Italian swingman Jeffrey Viggiano (197-84, college: Massachusetts, agency: SPORTlab Agency) produced 15 points and 7 rebounds and Greek swingman Michael Bramos (196-87, college: Miami, OH) added 18 points respectively for the hosts. Four CAI Zaragoza and five Umana Venezia players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. CAI Zaragoza have a solid series of three victories in a row. They maintain second place in Group C with 4-1 record having just -9 point less than leader Dolomiti En. TR. Loser Umana Venezia keeps the fourth position with three games lost. CAI Zaragoza will face bottom-ranked Spirou Charleroi (#6) on the road in the next round. Umana Venezia will play against ratiopharm Ulm and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
