Regular Season Round 8: Aris - Unics 76-70

Round 8 in Eurocup means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Thessaloniki where host Greek Aris (5-3) beat league's leader Russian Unics Kazan (5-3) 76-70 on Wednesday evening. It was a key game for the top position in Group D. The hosts trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 44-36 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Aris made 20-of-23 free shots (87.0 percent) during the game. Strangely Unics Kazan outrebounded Aris 42-24 including a 28-17 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was American guard Jerel McNeal (191-87, college: Marquette) who scored 15 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. The other American import guard Dominic Waters (185-86, college: Portland St.) chipped in 19 points. American-Turkish Keith Langford (193-83, college: Kansas) produced 25 points and 6 rebounds and Belarusian center Artsiom Parakhouski (211-87, college: Radford) added 11 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks respectively for the guests. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Aris keep a position of Group D leader. Just two games before the end of Regular Season and it may be the most important game of the season next round when Unics Kazan faces Buducnost trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Aris will try to continue on its current victory against sixth ranked Steaua CSM in Bucuresti.
