Regular Season Round 2: Tofas - Gran Canaria 98-94

There was a minor upset in Bursa where Spanish Gran Canaria (1-1) was defeated by Turkish Tofas (1-1) 98-94 on Tuesday. The hosts trailed by 2 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 4-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 98-94. Tofas made 17-of-18 free shots (94.4 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. The best player for the winners was American center Josh Owens (206-88, college: Stanford) who scored 16 points and 8 rebounds (perfect from the field making all seven shots !!!). Yigit Arslan (195-96) chipped in 21 points (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Latvian center Anzejs Pasecniks (218-95, college: VEF skola) produced 19 points and 6 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) and Israeli point guard Gal Mekel (190-88, college: Wichita St., agency: BeoBasket) added 16 points and 7 assists respectively for the guests. Five Tofas and four Gran Canaria players scored in double figures. Gran Canaria's coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Tofas will face Dolomiti En. TR (#5) in Trento in the next round. Gran Canaria will play on the road against ratiopharm Ulm (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
