Regular Season Round 7: Crvena Zvezda - Monaco 75-91

The most crucial game of the last round was another loss of Serbian Crvena Zvezda (4-3) in Beograd on Wednesday night. Hosts were defeated by French Monaco (5-2) 91-75. It was a key game for the top position in Group A. The guests trailed by 1 point at the halftime before their 47-30 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. Monaco made 18-of-23 free shots (78.3 percent) during the game. They also forced 20 Crvena Zvezda turnovers. Strangely Crvena Zvezda outrebounded Monaco 34-19 including 23 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. It was a great evening for guard Paul Lacombe (190-90, agency: BeoBasket) who led his team to a victory scoring 16 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals. American-Montenegrin point guard Derek Needham (180-90, college: Fairfield) helped adding 21 points and 6 assists. Four Monaco players scored in double figures. At the losing side American-Liberian point guard Joe Ragland (182-89, college: Wichita St.) responded with 12 points and 8 assists and Senegalese forward Mouhammad Faye (207-85, college: SMU) scored 6 points and 8 rebounds. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Monaco keeps a position of Group A leader. Defending Serbian champion Crvena Zvezda dropped to the second place with three games lost. They share the position with Andorra. Monaco will meet at home ratiopharm Ulm (#4) in the next round. Crvena Zvezda will play against Andorra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
