Rather expected game in Beograd where 5th ranked Italian Germani BR (4-5) was crushed by third ranked Serbian Crvena Zvezda (4-5) 103-67 on Wednesday. The game was mostly controlled by Crvena Zvezda. Germani BR was better in third quarter 21-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Crvena Zvezda shot 64.9 percent from the field. Crvena Zvezda outrebounded Germani BR 35-24 including a 31-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 15 long-distance shots on high 60.0 percentage. Crvena Zvezda looked well-organized offensively handing out 29 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Germani BR's players. Germani BR was plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. American-Liberian point guard Joe Ragland (182-89, college: Wichita St.) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 assists (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winners and American point guard Billy Baron (188-90, college: Canisius, agency: Octagon Europe) chipped in 13 points and 8 assists. Four Crvena Zvezda players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was American guard Bryon Allen (193-92, college: George Mason) with 17 points and the other American import guard Jared Cunningham (194-91, college: Oregon St., agency: BeoBasket) scored 14 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Defending Serbian champion maintains third place in Group A with 4-5 record having just three points less than leader Monaco, which they share with Ratiopharm and Germani BR. Crvena Zvezda will face bottom-ranked Galatasaray (#6) in Istanbul in the next round. Germani BR will play at home against ratiopharm Ulm and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
